Stereo volume problems???

The factory stereo in my 1992, 300D is acting peculiar. It is a radio/cassette/CD type. Everything was working fine till recently when in CD mode, the volume will only put out to about 1/3rd volume. Volume is fine when on radio. There is a bit of static like when there is a bad connection when switching from radio to CD etc. Any thoughts on what the problem is?
