New ICE Installation on a 93 500SEL
hey guys im new to this forum but i was just wondering if i can get some input before i start overhauling on this new project. The car is a 1993 500 SEL, with the bose system and becker cassette indash headunit. This is what im buying.
Alpine CDA 9847 headunit Alpine IPOD adaptor 2 Alpine SWR-1222D subs MRD-M605 600 RMS mono amp. i decieded were not going to upgrade the speakers because it is a 11 speaker system and believe it should be decent for this setup...just want some nice kick from the trunk lol. Anyways i hear rumors that if you put in an aftermarket headunit you must rewire cables to all the speakers and factory amps. Is this true?..what exactly do i need to do to install this headunit. Once the headunits in and working..i can install the amp..just gotta get a remote wire from the front or cd changer and everything else is fine. Please let me know if anyone can help with the front end though..i'd really appreciate it. thanks alot Jason |

I am quite sure you will need a line level converter to go to the Bose Amp and speakers or just to the speakers. Some of these adaptors are special for the year and make of the car..Check with http://www.crutchfield.com/S-IOs8J6Z0yZM/

thanks for the reply..i went to the link but it just brought me to the homepage..i went to installation tools but it says its not sure if it would fit my car because it hasnt "researched my car enough" . Do you think i just need a factory system adaptor that is basically like a wiring harness that goes from the speaker wires to my headunit?

Here goes, the system is eleven speakers driven by a seven channel "Bose" amp in the trunk over the drivers side rear wheel. Very prone to fail with popping and distortion. The "control" in the front is just that in addition of being a cassete player. The out put of that is a large din that goes to the "tuner" at the base of the rear wheerl. If you have the CD the lead is routed thru it and back to the tuner. The two channel output is routed to the "Bose". There are two speakers in enclosures in each front door, there is one speaker in each rear door, four speakers on the rear deck, 2 (2) ohm wired in series for bass. There is a tweeter behind the rear view mirror, the outboard speakers on the dash are for the CTEL option, and could be installed, they are tied together and the wire runs into the antenna area in the trunk. The front to rear is handled by the fader switch in the console. There is no antenna lead in the front, it goes to the tuner in the trunk.
To get out the back seat requires some extraordinary skills since panels have to be removed, heated seats and electric headrests add to the fun. The gas tank is positioned in back of the rear seat, and the wires are in looms along the door sills. Has it been done I think so, but not very often! That should give you something to ponder, some of those looms are pretty dry when it comes to insulation flexing and slicing and splicing could get you other issues. |
