What type of torx screws hold the radio together? I might just run out to an auto store and pick a set up.

My wife wants a stock radio in her 97 SL320 because the aftermarket is too hard to use, small buttons, no volume knob etc. I found several nice ones at the wrecking yark and now have to pull mine and see whats left of the original wiring, the junk yard said they could cut the harness ends for me if I need them, I did a google search and found the wiring diagram, looks like an afternoon with reading glasses soldering!

I know how you feel! I just bought a 99' e300 diesel. It has an aftermarket. I hate it! small buttons! it looks like times square at night! I liked the becker in there. i think this car has fiber optics, so i'm scared to see what the factoy wiring will look like!

I looked at some of the 98 and newer units with fiber optics and the 3 main hookups look the same ans the older ones, I think the fiber optic is running to the trunk for the cd changer. One other item to check is weather your car radio was a real becker or the Japan unit, you have to use the corrrect radio, have your MB parts man pull up your car and tell you what radio to look for.

An old Becker? I'd just find a simple phillips screw to use versus the Torx.

becker radios smell!

Give him the old unit as part of the sale! If he thinks beckers (older) are any good, let him have the hassle. They are awful units. A $90 Sony cassete (no amp needed) are far superior! Just my 2 cents. Abe G

For the price of a cheap boy racer stereo with blinking lights and a neon sign that says steal me steal me you can get a European Mercedes Audio 10 unit. I have one in my 300SD. While the cheap aftermarket units might have a few more features they are not designed to last as long as the car is. After 2 or 3 of these stereos come and go in a car the next owners are left with a hacked up mess of wires behind the dash. The Becker units might not be the best in the world but they are designed to last as long as the car is. You can also get one repaired if it stops working. Once that Sony that does not match your dash is replaced by the new model your out of luck for repairs since they are considered disposable.

I just pulled the Alpine and whoever installed it saved the harness they cut and tie wrapped it to the old harness!!!!!! I found a stock radio and all I have to do is mend the wires back together, thank-you thank-you to whoever did it. My daughter wants the fancy Alpine in her Mustang, she can see good enough to read all the small buttons.

I put an aftermarket in mine, but fortunately it connected correctly to the factory harness. Otherwise I wouldn't have done it.

I'm still considering fixing the volume control on the OEM unit and putting it back. I hate the look of any of the aftermarkets that I've seen, including the one that I have. But I got it used for $75, so it's no big loss if I take it out and don't use it again.

Took me about 10 minutes. Plugs right in with an adapter harness.

Is a great radio but it does not like CD-R's that much. I have one in my 126 but I am going to do something different in my 140. They have a unit that was designed for the 140 but not sold here in the US and I am probably going to go with that one.
