New radio for my 300D, what to get??

well i need to replace my stock stereo, but am not sure what to get. i totally do not want to get a "ricey" or way too modern looking stereo, and prefer something close to stock.

i saw this stereo on cruchfield, and had an idea

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Sl6OtIigQqN/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&id=morephotos&pi=1&i=023BERMUDA&display=L#Tab

this blaupunk does not look to bad at all, except for the silver buttons. is there a way that i could paint the silver to be black, then it would look kinda good with everything black except the blue dot.

i dont just want to use a permanent marker, as i bet it would just rubb off on the most used buttons after a week. any paint that i could use? how would i keep the numbers on there?

if there are other radio's that you guys have installed do any of you have pics?

Also what 4" speakers should i get for the front, and what size do i need for the back? what do you guys all have?

Here is a really good radio. I love lanzar my dad got this radio for a nissan we used to have and loved it. Plus the price is good! by the way crutchfeild overprices alot of their products.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LANZAR-CAR-CD-MP3-RADIO-PLAYER-STEREO-PLAYERS-W-MEMORY_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43947QQitemZ8033609031QQrdZ1

On the back of my dads 300D they are 5 1/4 speakers but we are going to put 6.5's SDAT's. I always recommend SDAT brand i have SDAT and love them. i have SDAT 6x9s in the back 6.5's on the doors and 12' SDAT subs cant get enough of that SDAT!

look on ebay or overstock.com for good deals on SDAT speakers.

greaseybenz....I reckon I'm just an old fart.....but I don't get it! You are sitting within arms reach of the radio, why do you need a remote control? Just reach over and punch one of those 8,000 buttons.

NOW, I do think a MONDO SIZED remote is REQUIRED on my living room recliner! As well as a kick butt SHOP SOUND SYSTEM...the JBL speakers no longer "match the decor" in the house, but they still work great out in the shop....I at times use the "sonic degreasing method", Santana works very well!!

Pioneer makes models that are satellite ready.

Also, make sure it plays MP3 discs. I love that feature. I have discographies, not just albums on my discs.

i would only get a radio that plays mp3's, but i really just care about the looks. i would hate to have a radio that flashes like crazy, and just looks flashy. i have a 20gb mp3 system in my gasser, that i am thinking about installing under my driver seat. but in order to do this i still have to replaced the radio to get the AUX in.

how would i paint the buttons?

Assuming the buttons are plastic...they have "plastic" paint at lowes or ace. I've only looked at rattle cans...they may have it in pint cans. Sherwin Williams has XIM primer...sticks to almost anything...I've only used white but it MAY be tintable or put a black topcoat over it.

I have 4" front and 5.25" Pioneers all around under the factory covers with my stock head unit and a FM modulator for a line in (iPod) that comes out of the ash tray (cut slot in top for iPod to slide into) and it sounds diecent. The lack of speaker size is the problem not the head for me. A new Becker would look the best.

If someone were so inclined I think it would be really cool to add a navi to these cars. I know they have them with screens that pop up so you wouldn't really have to cut or change anything.

Their are so many choices out their it really comes down to what you want to spend. You could put an $80 head unit in and get some pretty decent sound. Or you spend $1,500 on a nice set of 6 JL speakers, with a cross over, amp, and a head unit.

However one thing is certian the stock speakers are crap, you will get "decent" low volume sound out of them only. If you want to crank heavy metal or rap you will need moder speakers and an amp.

A great DIN-sized replacement radio that does it ALL!

I recently installed the Kenwood EZ700-SR and I'm VERY happy with it. I chose it for its built-in Sirius Satellite Radio tuner but it also plays CDs and MP3/WMA CDs, has a great AM/FM tuner and with the Kenwood iPod adapter it'll control AND charge your iPod! I like that it's not at all flashy, fits perfectly in the stock spot and has switchable illumination (red or green). Another cool thing: because I like it dark in my cabin when I'm driving on roads with no lighting I found I can actually "drop down" the front panel of the radio (leaving it attached) and it'll continue to play.

When I installed mine I got the adapters from Crutchfield and it made patching into the old wiring a piece of cake (or you could choose to run new wiring - I didn't feel it necessary). I also upgraded my speakers to new Pioneers - and though I have no subwoofer, I'm very pleased with the improvement.

I just checked the Crutchfield site and the EZ700SR is discontinued and has been replaced by the EZ900HDS, which adds High Def radio reception. Find it here: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-wRZraTUTfSS/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&id=other_items&i=113EZ900#Tab

Honestly i didnt see a good reason for the remote when we had it in a small nissan sentra but once we decided to sell the car we took out the radio to put in the mustang convertible. And we found some good use for the remote, to keep the original stock look of the mustang we left the old 60's chrome AM radio on the dash and mounted the lanzar inside the glove box and controlled it with the remote while the door was closed still keeping the original look, now that was clever!

Panasonic MP3-WMA

Got this Panasonic new from E-Bay two years ago for my 84 300SD ($160). It has plenty of power, high-pass and low-pass filters for the front and rear speakers. Fronts are currently Infinity 4x6 in front, and Infinity Kappa 6x9 on the floor in the back (in little boxes, nobody sits back there anyway), used as subs. (the 4x6 mounts on the back shelf really give no bass response) Get something with a twist knob for the volume. Good for classical, voice, Led Zeplin, what have you. Very Clear.

Have you ever used one in a car stereo before? They're very nice. Eyes do not have to come off the road to change the channel/function/volume even.

I never purchase an aftermarket stereo without one.

I would go with alpine or eclipse personally. If you like sattelite radio or use an ipod alpines are great... Just buy it on Ebay though you wont find a better price anywhere..

DieselFitter,
So it was pretty plug n play on the install? I've been looking at crutchfield for a new stereo. Never having installed one, it would be great to just be able to throw it in there. Is there any real need to re-run the speaker wire?
And what did you do about the fader? Seems like there is a lot written here about going around it, etc.

Thanks,

steve.
