Stock Becker Grand Prix radio anyone?

My wagon is in need of a radio, as the removable faceplate on the one in it now has busted buttons and such.
Well, I'm borrowing a buddy's 300D right now, and his car has the original Becker Grand Prix. I really like the look and I like the controls.
Has anybody pulled one of these out and have it sitting around? I may also need the harness ends, as my current radio was as amateurishly installed as one could imagine.
I seriously doubt these are in high demand, so I thought someone might have one laying around.
I will attach a couple of pics. I've seen at least 2 kinds, and I'm looking for the one with the volume control as shown.
Thanks yall

I come upon them often. I'll just give it to you when I pick up one, I have a pile of broken Beckers sitting to my left.

I'd go for a 754-780 model if you choose to do this, they're better than that old 611 or 612 model. I have three bad 1480s, a bum 754, a bad 1432, hrmmm... maybe a 612 laying about too.

Troubleshooting a Becker

You sound like you know your way around a Becker--the one in my 300D is, I think, disconnected, there is a service note that it kept blowing fuses. Any ideas what this could be, or if it is common?

Thanks in advance.

Steve.

Even better-- if you have one I can swap in, I might be interested. Mine matches the one in the right hand pic above.

Not the "authority" but decent grip.

Blowing fuses often is a sign of a bad ground. You could pull it to have a look behind it and see if the wiring is proper. Also the fuse is inexpensive, (Less than $1). Maybe the tape blows them.

The one on the right is the 612 model, I rarely see them still installed in parts cars. It's such an old, poor sounding unit. But I'll keep they eyes open.

Yes, everyone has their opinion. The 754 or 780 sound far better to me than the 612 did I had for a bit.

Does the 754 or 780 look alot different than the 612? I'm also going to need the wiring harness ends while I'm being demanding, as the half arse splice/hack job is comical. (and scary at the same time).

Edit***
Another question. Do the newer styles of radio/cd player connect to the antenna the same way? Do newer radios get the same AM/FM reception. Oddly enough, AM is my biggest concern.....

Nice Article on Rebuilding/Soldering GrandPrix

In the Mercedes-Benz Technical Companion there is a great article-

"Advanced Radio Repair: The Becker Grand Prix Electronic". It has 5 full pages of pictures -- very detailed. This book has other great article pertaining to our cars including refurbishing the cruise control actuator and turbo. Worth the $35.00 for sure.

Sorry for hijacking the thread a little, but anyhow. Good find on the Companion manual, from what I've read it is a good addition to the library. Found it on Am-zon for $26 (28 with tax, free shipping). Will check the ground as well.

Thanks,

Steve.

The 754/80 have the bigger LCDs and more power. Just more modern, first came out in '86. The 780 I think came out in '88?

I'll get you a harness for sure next time I'm out and about for sure. Do you need to know which wires go where also?

Most of the aftermarket radios use the same antenna plug, SOME require an adapter. Shop ebay for those I would. I know my Alpine has a stronger tuner than either of my Pioneers, I'd assume most everything aftermarket is going to have a superior FM tuner and potentially AM also.

If you still have old speakers, I'd upgrade those. 20+ years in the Texas sun isn't helping them.

ISBN number on that? I come into enough of these Beckers where I could probably easily fix some.

Becker is -

Around the shop, we understood "Becker" to be the German word for "crap electronics"... but the REAL word we used had 4 letters & started with S -

Blaupunkt has a nice ring to it -
