Im going to put a 4" componet set in my car (85 190e)and i was wondering where would be the best place to mount the tweeters. Im thinking of the A pillars but i wanted to get some advice first.

doug,

there's many places that you can mount your tweeters, but I think the best place to mount them is somewhere near the midranges. When you do this, the sounds coming from the tweeter and the sounds coming from the midrange have less of a chance of going out of "phase" with each other. It's best to keep them within 6" of each other.

I also have an 85 190E, and my tweeters are mounted on the dash, where the 4" inch stock speaker use to be. With my setup like this, my imaging was really high, meaning the high frequency sounds bounced off from the windshield and ended up near my head. This gives you the " overwhelming" effect. You may find this to be too much.

Anyhow, wherever you mount your tweeters, try to keep them as close to the midrange as you can, and also try to have them pointed to the middle of the car. Kick panels are a good idea, where the sounds are coming directly to your ears.

Tell me what you decide, and how you sucessfully mounted those 5.25 midranges. Good luck!

Well, on my 190E, I put the 4" woofer in the door, and put the tweeter in the dash location instead of putting another 4" in the dash. If you haven't picked a set yet, use the MB Quarts they are really a night and day difference. I am a solid believer after another w124 owner blew my Kenwood Components away.

You will want your tweeters near your midranges to avoid phase problems - but don't aim them off the windshield. In my experience, mids sound really good off the windshield as it helps staging in many cases, but there is uaually a little coloration. With tweeters you will find a LOT of harshness if they reflect off the windshield, they will be overwhelming as someone else already said.
Something you might consider - a friend of mine put his tweeters in one of those toy plastic eggs (a tweeter in each half) and stuck a little paper clip type piece of metal under it, and stuck it on the grille. You can paint it to match the dash. I've found that tweeters work really well when pointed to the opposite side; right tweeter aimed at left listener, and vice versa.
I'm glad to see someone likes mb quart! I'm sick of hearng about how "harsh" they are - when aimed off axis and attenuated slightly, they're some of the most precise and accurate tweeters i've ever heard. Out of curiousity, what kind of components are you getting?

I had a 93 190E with the optional premium sound package, don't think it was bose though. However, I have a 4" dash, 4" woofer in the door, and 5" in the rear deck. The 5 in the door was cut a little more to house a 5.25". I know the rear grilles allow for a wide covering, so I planned on installing a set of tweeters under them if space permits.

i wouldnt put tweeters in the back - you'll want your soundstage to be in front of you; get the front sttuff good, then mess with the back if you get a lot of passengers. Good luck!

Only reason I was considering adding tweeters in the back, is because I wanted to get the MB Quart Q-series components in the rear which are only available in 5.25" and 6.5" They blew me away when I heard them in another's 300CE, and won't settle for anything less. That and the Eclipse Subs I am getting, should complette the car.
