84 300 d radio question

I am waiting for the OE radio to be repaired. I installed a cheap aftermarket I had lying around. Question is where can I run the hot wire temporarily so that it switches off with the key? Fuse box? I have the hot wire running through the firewall and am trying to make this as easy as possible dont want to go directly to the battery and dont want to tap in under dash. Any help appreciated. Thanks

The quick and easy way is to find a fuse in the box that turns off with the key and just jam a wire in the fuse holder with the fuse. It isn't clean, it isn't long lasting, but it is quick. It may also be dangerous, so do it at your own risk.

I can say I have wired accessories in my cars this way and I am yet to have a fire. <knock on wood>

Glen have seen this approach many times. If joining to a fuse end in the fuse box always try to establish the connection so that the existing fuse offers some protection. Usually saves wires going up in flames if a heavy short develops. Perhaps you just ommited it from your description.

If I recal, and I'm not in front of my fuse box but #'s 12 -16 on the lower set should be the ones.
Best to just run the wire to the box, turn on the key and touch the hot wire to the fuse holder clips, and listen for music. Actually when I did this for my fuel pump, the whole lower set were good.

I just experimented with this today. The cigarette lighter is on only with ignition on, the same as the radio. You could easily tap into it and it's fused.

Just tap into the original radio power wire with a scotch lock connector. Quick and clean. Then you wont risk burning up your car "jamming" a wire in the fuse block.
