Have you thought about a Mcintosh headunit? I am not sure if they have mp3, but they are known for havign units that sound fantastic, and good looking too.
just something to check into. If I had that car I would go with a Pioneer AVIC Series unit. either the n1, n2, or new n3, or one of the double din units like the D1, d2, or the new Z series. But I am a pioneer fan myself. I have had pioneers in my car's since I started driving. Always liked how they worked and looked. never really liked how the alpines etc worked as far as going through menus. though the alpine that came in my benz when I got it was a good unit, but it was old school alpine, before they had like 10 menus to go through to adjust the bass and treble.

Doesn't Scott (RunEXE) have the whole McIntosh setup in his 500E?
I bet it sounds awesome, but I am willing to be he spent at least a coupla grand getting it all together. That is the extreme high end of the spectrum. Maybe when I am older, and I make more money, I can put it into a stereo like that. Wishful thinking for me though.

I totally agree, Ashman! That is why I am moving away from Alpine. Way too complicated to run. And, I have looked at McIntosh! They are really nice. I printed out some material on them. Found a few on ebay for around $600. I am wondering who I would have service it if needed. It's kinda like the R/C hobby. You stick to what's available in your area. I had a Pioneer in my first car, too! The ole Supertuner cassette deck. Matter of fact, I may still have it in a box somewhere. I cannot seem to get rid of any of my old stereo stuff!
bcat, I am not sure of the exact answer but I would say at least 30+ years on Pioneer and 25+ on Alpine. justinwrock, just start saving up equipment like I did. The amps I plan to use in my Benz I bought 3 years ago! I knew I would use them one day. The system in my Honda is 16+ years old. And, is in the second car now! Still sounding great!! I'll attach a pic of the Alpine HU I have. It is not mine, but just like it. Ashman, it IS oldschool Alpine. No bells, no whistles, just plain, damn good! It has no internal power, 4v pre-out (3 sets of RCA) and no screensaver or menu's. I love it! Let's keep this thread going! I enjoy the comments and chatter. Also, in order for me to get the Clarion, I have to sell some stuff. PM me if you are in need of anything. I'll see if I have it. P.S. justinwrock, you are aware that my MB HU is a cassette, don't you?

Hmmm...good question. They are in a class almost by themselves. They would be matched up with the likes of Nakamichi, Denon, Clarion Pro, etc. in car audio. With prices similar to eachother. The home audio line is usually quite pricey. The quality is unmatched, though. Their car (& home) amps are some of the best out there. Let's put it this way, if you got the cash, you won't be disappointed!

I really like Clarion - I installed a Clarion HU in my last car and was very happy with it. I didn't consider it for this car due to cost - adding in the Satellite tuner, etc really ramped it up quickly. Also, the majority of my driving is highway, and the very fine details will be lost due to wind/tire noise. I decided to try Pioneer Premier due to reputation. They seem to have hit on a good combination of quality, price, features, and durability. Alpine has always been good, but I just didn't like the HU for some reason - the green was too bright or something. The Pioneer is pretty understated which fits in my car nicely! Side note, I was at the dealer (I still let them service it for me - they've always done a good job). When I came in to pick it up, they told me that all the mechanics were climbing in to have a listen - they couldn't believe the sound coming out of a 95 E class! Made me feel good
