Is it impossible to upgrade speakers in my 123?
All - My 1978 240D has the original sound system - a Becker am/fm radio and two speakers in the dash. The only thing in the rear deck is a first aid kit on the driver's side. There are no rear speakers. I've grown weary of driving around with a 28 year old sound system, but it seems that a speaker upgrade can't be done. The space for the speakers in the dash is too small for anything that might generate a decent sound, and I've been warned that cutting into the rear deck will weaken the car's structural integrity. Is there an audio guru out there who can give me some advice?

I don't know the details of a 240D, but I would bet you could replace the dash speakers with something decent and put a sub in the trunk and get reasonable sound. Would require a fair amount of rewiring and work though.

You should have 4" speakers in the dash of that if I recall when I had a W123. I THINK I installed them from the top. You'll have to yank the gauge cluster and glove box insert to gain access to everything.
I don't think two 5.25" holes or two 6.5" holes will decrease the vehicle's structure enough to where you will notice it. With the 4" up front and some 6.5" out back you'll have some decent sound with a quality head unit. Again, I highly recommend running a small external amplifier. Sure you'll have to rewire, but do you really want near 30 year old speaker wire anyway? Read this - (124)4" MB QUART DKD110 spkrs an exact fit? And search for me as a poster in this section. Head unit power blows. HU, small amp, new speakers, powered woofer... heck for about $400 you'd think you were live in the opera house listening to The Marriage of Figaro.

I had a 240D once...
The 123 had an option for 4 speakers, at least my 78 did. There were cut outs in the rear deck for 4" speakers, whiche were later upgraded to 4x6 plates, and later still to 6.5" speakers.
No loss of structure, it was a T-bone from an inattentive sailor, that killed her. Go for it, you can't hurt the bloody thing, and besides, the dash is already cracked, right? |

I just replaced the front speakers in m 240D. They are standard 4 inch, I bought replacement 4 inch speakers at walmart for $7 each. Two of the mounting tabs will have to be trimmed with tin snips for padded dash clearance. Lay the old speaker face down on the new one and you'll see where to trim. My original speakers were soldered in, so I soldered the new one in too. Good Luck, Chuck

Theese are THE best 4" speakers I've EVER heard
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=932' they had great midbass... If you've never been in a vehicle with a sub, you're mistaking bass for midbass... Do you go to a concert, and turn around? dont have rear speakers, and you wont get that effect The 30 year old speaker wire is fine... As long as it's unbroken, and there's no white oxidation, you're fine... How old is the wiring in your home? dont waste your money on a powered sub... waste of money... for $150, you can have a VERY nice entry leval subwoofer setup ~Nate
