Help with 1994 SL500 radio

I’ve tried the search... this might be a new one! My radio is inoperative.

Symptoms:

On starting the car, radio display toggles between 89.9 (my current listen) and "Phone" approximately every 1/2 second.

Antenna mast does not rise.

Bose Woofer amp has audible relay click every time the display toggles.

Other points: I’m not sure of the car had a factory phone. The center consol above the vents has a fuzzy-lined box, but there is a hole (poorly) punched in the back.

Underneath the passenger side carpet, there is CB type antenna cord/connector that is just floating around unconnected to anything. There is also a ground wire, connected to a lug that is cut.

The antenna motor is not trying to run. It behaves as if it is not being commanded to raise.

My thoughts:

The radio is getting a false signal to switch to phone mode? (phantom limb ;-)
The antenna is stuck, making the radio confused?

The problem happened a few times - then cleared. I cleaned the antenna (dry, thinking that was the problem) it worked for a few days then went totally inop.

Im forced to drive the Jeep!!!!

Thanks in advance!

Brian

I lied

I only searched the SL forum. Here's what I found out:

There is a wire into the Becker radio that, when grounded, puts the radio into mute mode, and the radio displays "Phone." This wire must be shorting. somewhere.

Can someone tell me where the phone module is or was? Guess: underneath the passenger feet?

Bobterry, JimB, anyone: Should I just snip the wire that feeds pin A3 in the back of the radio? Thus eliminating the mute function all together?

ref: many threads in the audio section and, of course: http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_Bekr.html Thanks Jim!
