AM Side is mostly static except at night

I have a '01 E320 since moving about 900 miles, the AM side of the radio has become mostly static during the day. I was told there is a splitter/junction box in the rear pillar that could possibly be the problem...which side and how do I get to it? I've also been told the amp might be bad, is this under the back seat or ???, there's nothing in the trunk but the spare. I've been told the antenna is in the back window and the film I put on is causing the problem...the films been on since new and the problems started about 60 days ago. Any ideas?

Because of the way AM stations broadcast their signal and the very nature of the AM signal, they do have a normal tendancy to be able to be picked up better at night because of less interference. A good radio late at night can pick up AM stations from a long way away.

I remember listening to Fort Wayne, Chicago, and New York AM stations on my dinky little AM radio as a kid. I lived in a fairly rural area of North Carolina. Those signals can really travel a long way at night.

I had to go to a body shop to see/learn how to remove the fabric coated plastic piece that hides some wiring and the amplifier (the riders side rear post). Once I got the piece off (wear latex gloves, it's not an easy job for somebody who doesn't know how the body pieces lock in place) the amp was easily found. I turned the radio on and while twisting the antenna coupling lead to the radio, the static very suddenly cleared and everything now is as good as new. Thanks for your suggestions and especially the location of the amp.

Bob
