I had the Sprint-PCS Samsung speakerphone installed for my 8500. It works wonderfully. But I don't like only hearing the voice coming from the passenger footwell! So I asked the man at Circuit City if I could wire it to the existing speaker, he said yes, I could. The speaker for the system uses the regular 1/8 inch headphone connector.

Here is what I did...
I bought a headphone jack y-adaptor, a 1/8 inch headphone extension wire, and some speaker wire.

I connected the y-adaptor into the phone control module (samsung) so that I could have 2 OUTPUTS, one for the Samsung speaker and one for the MB HiFi speaker mounted in the rear deck. I then connected the 1/8 inch extension wire into one of the 2 outs from the y adaptor. I ran this cord until it ended, cut it and spliced it, hooking it onto the speaker wire, and ran it back and hooked it up to the HiFi speaker.

Problem:
Sound car barely be heard out of the HiFi speaker while the Samsung speaker works perfectly, you don't even notice the HiFi speaker because the original speaker is so loud (regular), but when disconnected, you can hear, faintly, the HiFi speaker.

Why is this? (something to do with ohms?)
How can I correct it so that it is as loud as the other?

Ohm's Law?

Probably Ohm's Law has got you! Didn't I read someplace (from you I think?), that the MB speakers are typically 4 ohm impedance. Probably the Samsung (S) is 16 ohms or higher, thus the problem. The S output cannot drive the 4 ohm speaker.

Also are you sure about the wiring? Perhaps the CC guy wired it backwards, effectively shorting out the signal?

If not, there's not much you can do except make a 'mixer' function. A mixer isolates each input into it and provides separate output control to each output. Thus you need to do this. How to do this easily, I'm not sure!

Possibly just inserting a small power amp (2-3 watts) from the S output will do the job. Radio Shack has a Line-out converter ($19.99) that may convert the S output to line level output (pg 369 of 2001 catalog). Still not sure that it will drive a 4 ohm speaker. You need to LOOK at the unit before you buy it to make sure.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I was wondering the same...
I suppose I will need to buy an amp? Can I do this? How involved will that get? Any other info would help greatly. Thanks. Maybe they can help me at Radio Shack...?
The guy at Circuit City wired it properly, I'm sure.

If my memory serves me correct I have been wrong before the LF speaker (in the dash beside the A pillar) is already wired for speaker phone. I'm curious as to why you chose the rear speaker.

Scott,
Unfortunatly for you, you are wrong (nothing new for you I suppose! JK). On the rear deck of the car, there are 4 slots for speakers. On the end of either side are the BOSE speakers (labeled BOSE). On the driver's side of the deck next to the BOSE speaker there is a speaker labeled HIGH FIDELITY. I did find out quite some time ago that this was the Speakerphone speaker. And on the passenger side, there is just a blank.
Anyway, the speaker next to the A-pillar is one of my tweeters, maybe this is wired to the speakerphone also?

David,

If you have a clear sound from the samsung speaker and are satisfied with the volume level of that samsung speaker, you better disconnect the MB phone speaker. There is no need to hook up a second speaker in the rear of the car when the first one is already satisfying.
It is very well possible that both speakers operate on a different ohm-level; this is something you should be able to read from the back of the speakers.

greetingz,

Steve,
Thanks for the info, but how would I correct this?! The first speaker is ok, and the normal person would be satisfied, but since I have the possible option to add a second speaker and make this even better, I want to do it if possible. So to me, it currently is NOT satisfying!! Have any ideas on how I could get this working?

Start by checking the impedance of the speakers first. Take a look whether the number of ohms of both speakers is equal. I presume that you can easily read the ohms of the rear speaker bottom when you look at it in the trunk. I don't know how the samsung speaker looks like, but maybe you can read the ohms from that speaker (or manual) as well.
After you know the possible difference between the impedance of both speakers you know whether they can be connected together or not.

Sorry to drag this up but....

Im doing a speakerphone in my car too, and I need to know where to get to the wiring for the mb speaker, the right side rear speaker as seen from the open trunk

it looks like this

\____/ \_x__/ |xxxxx| \____/

this is what can be seen from the rear deck

the rightmost and leftmost speakers are for the stereo system

the speaker marked with 1 x is the "high fidelity" Mb phone speaker

the |xxxxx| represents a foam blank that is in place of the 2nd speaker on the passenger side of the car. I'm using a nokia cark-114 which is the cigarette lighter car kit, (nokia idiots dont make a real car kit for my 8860 ughhh...) Regardless I modified this kit for permanent installation in my car. Anyone who needs info on this, I can provide detailed info, and photos, It's actually rather easy.

Now I want to tap into the original MB phone speaker - Please let me know if you know the location of the wiring for the speaker in question. Best wishes and take care - George
