1988 420 SEL. I just attempted to have a Blaupunkt wired into the factory system by a local shop. They wired the speaker outputs directly into the preamp ins on the factory system because the Blaupunkt pre outs didnt have enough power for the system. This setup Sounds great but when the radio is turned off the internal amp on the Blaupunkt will not turn back on unless the both speaker wires from the blaupunkt are disconnected from the factory preamp ins. This problem does not occur if They use the RCA preamp outs on the blaupunkt but as stated before this does not produce acceptable power.
Anyone have a clue?

Thanks

Dave...

Need to know:

Which model Blaupunkt?

Did the installer bypass the factory fader?

My Best Suggestion...

Contact Blaupunkt directly: http://www.blaupunktusa.com.

The guys at Blaupunkt will tell you to use the RCA outs. Okay well, here goes. As far as I can tell, speaker outs are designed for 2-16 ohm loads. The preamp inputs are usually in the KILO-ohms range. Perhaps even up to 50k ohms. The speaker outs from the Blaupunkt are probably between 0.1 and 0.2 ohms. The Blaupunkt is probably looking at the 50k ohm load and running its auto diagnostic when you first turn it on and saying oh ***** I had better clip. It's a little like your blender or your in sink garbage disposal. Too high of a load and it shuts down.

Something is wrong if you can't get sufficient voltage out of the RCA outs on the Blaupunkt. What kind of speakers do you have? How efficient are they? How many ohms? How are they wired? How powerful is the power amp? All these things may play a factor.

Somebody Messed Up...

The RPD-545 has 40-45 Watts per channel into 4 channels. From what I can see, the unit should be wired into the speaker wires directly and bypassing the factory fader.

AUDIO SPECS FOR RPD-545:

Peak Internal Power 4x45 Watts
Preamp Outputs 2 (RCA)
Preamp Power Level 2v
Preamp Impedance 75Ohm

You only have 2 RCA outs on that unit. I don't know your car well enough the know what the "factory system" is that you refer to. Is there amps left from the Becker that the installer is using? If so, what are their wattage?

All I can tell you is that I installed my Blaupunkt Boston myself, and did it by bypassing the console fader control so I use the full wattage of the Boston, and the fader in the head unit.

Kuan?, Q?, anyone else?

Right now the factory amps are bypassed and the speakers are wired directly to the blaupunkt but it had more kick with the factory amp. I'm considering a new amp that will work with the RCA's on the blaupunkt.

The Blaupunkt should be able to drive whatever speakers are in that car. Even mid-efficiency speakers with a sensitivity of 91db can be driven to 108db with 45 watts. Subtract 3db if speakers are 4 ohms, another three if they are 2 ohms. Most listening is done at under 5 watts. I don't see any reason for elaborate wiring. 2V from the preamp out is normal and should work unless the factory preamp is passive, ie., attenuation but no actual amplification. You do not need two preamps anyway so toss the factory one. I have a question, can you run the RCA into the power amps? Also, do the power amps have a gain switch?

Sorry, I see you have already done what I said above and it's not giving you enough kick. Try taking the preamp outputs directly to the power amps and see what happens.

Could it be that the speaker outputs of the new radio have floating ground, both leads carry Voltage, none off them is ground, and you want to connect to the 3 lead audio line to the fader and amplifier. One of the 3 leads is ground and shorts out the output stages of your new radio. Since radios nowadays are short circuit protected it just shuts down and does nothing.
