W124 aftermarket stereo removal
I need to remove an aftermarket stereo from my W124. I know the factory ones are held in by those clips and are removed with the special tools (which I have). But how are aftermarket ones mounted and held in place? Do I need to pull the carpet off the sides of the console?
I've removed the ash tray and climate control and haven't seen anything holding the stereo in.

You do not need to remove the sides of the console!!
I'm no stereo expert. I can only tell you how my aftermarket unit is installed in my 300e (which is for sale - see classifieds). On my Sony head unit there is a four sided sheetmetal sleeve which is installed into the radio opening. The head unit, in turn, slides into the sleeve and clicks in place. I pull off the trim rig and remove the face plate to expose a small slot on either side of the unit. Slide the Sony tool down the slots and it pops right out of the sleeve. I wouldn't be surprised if most aftermarket units come out like this. You should be able to make your own removal tool out of flat stock - a ground down hacksaw blades perhaps.

ahh. yes. Thanks. Now that I think about it, I installed one years ago with the metal sleeve and the tabs and all that.

On my pioneer radio, i just slide a "key" down the side between the two metal tabs, and it unlocks the unit. From there, I just pull on one of the metal tabs with a screwdriver and it slides out!
