95 C280 Retractable Antenna Failed

The retractable antenna on my 95 C280 stopped working today. I turned off the car, heard the antenna retract, then heard a 'thud'. When I restarted the car, the antenna would not extend. I can hear a 'whiring' sound as if it is attempting to extend the antenna, but nothing happens.

I took a quick look in the trunk, but there doesn't appear to be an easy way to get to the area where the antenna is from the inside. The trunk lining appears to be riveted.

I'd like to at least look at the damage before I take it to my mechanic.

Any help would be appreciated.

Probably just needs a new antenna mast. I'll see if we have a DIY article on that..

The rivets pop out easy. Just slip a putty knife or similar tool under the head and pop out the center core. Then you can remove the actual rivet. If a new mast doesn't fix it, online sources (such as Fast Lane) can supply a new unit for around $200. Don't have it rebuilt by Walter Odemer - it costs the same $ and doesn't last.

I couldn't find the mast operation here. Found a description at another site:
http://www.thebenzbin.com/mercedes-antenna-mast.html
here is another one:

I would recommend trying to buy the mast here though, to support this site!
We need to get this on our own DIY section; anyone??

Maybe an Easy Fix

If it's like the older mercedes, it's an easy fix. I bought my replacement from the benz bin (years ago) and followed their instructions. The little plastic zip/tooth bit cracks and breaks after awhile.

Only tip, be very careful when you unscrew the mast. It's easy to ding/scratch the paint on your car if you're using a thicker wrench. BTDT (dope!).

Thanks for your help

Thanks very much for the help. Is there any difference between Hirschmann and APA (except the $60 price difference)?

Thanks again.

I'd recommend calling Phil and talking to him. If you look at the larger picture of the Hirsch, it has the black top section, which I know is the pricey one. Can't remember what those were used for, something special, maybe cell phone as well as radio? At any rate, you should be able to get the correct mast from Hirsch for about the same price as the other one.

When I needed a new mast for my 1995 C280, I talked to Phil and he told me to save my money and buy the APA. The APA is an aftermarket unit that is identical to the Hirschman (including black nonmetallic top section).
