I'm looking to add some bass to my 87' 300SDL as it is severely lacking at the moment.

Rather than putting a huge sub in the trunk i'd rather have it inside the actual cab of the car. While reading up on this I found an article on installing an amp for the W124 in which the author mentioned installing an 8" or 10" sub in the med kit compartment.

When I lifted mine up in my car I found a nice big solid piece of wood in leu of a kit...

My question is: Is this hunk of wood easily removable? How deep is it below the wood?

I have a really nice 8" subwoofer that i'd like to put there if possible...

You have to realize, a speaker needs a box; for proper tuning.


I have an 8 inch Tang Brand sub that I'm planning on making a nice bass horn for. You have all the room in the boot, why not use it?

Is that the sub? because that is EXACTLY what i'm putting in there...

You a member of Diyaudio or htguide? cuz i am ^_^ No need to tell me about box tunings and such. I'd just like to keep my trunk empty and it seemed like it would be easier to wire if it was actually in the cab of the car.

Do you think the 8" on a ported box tuned to about 30hz would do well in the trunk? I don't want earthshaking bass that everyone within 100ft of me can hear, i'd just like something to augment the crappy built in speakers (that will be replaced around Xmas)

Was that my article? lol...I ended up putting the sub in the trunk. 10" sub in a ported box. The bass is great, although I am planning on cutting away some of the thick underpadding in the first aid area to let a bit more sound into the cabin. On my w124, there are existing holes cut in the sheet metal of the first aid kit area. So I'll leave the upper and thin layer of carpet and only cut away the lower underpadding. This will essentially create a stealth port into the cabin and the thin carpet will allow the bass to pass easily.

As far as mounting a sub directly into the firt aid kit well, it's been done and there are threads on it here. I suppose the two options are to either install a free-air sub there, or mount the one you posted into the hole and build a box around it, on the underside of the rear shelf. That would definitely be a nice option - you would probably get great bass response from mounting to the shelf, and you wouldn't lose trunk space, plus it would be a clean install. Good luck!

As to the hunk of wood - not sure. Your gas tank is probably right below it, so be careful cutting/drilling.

The thing is i'm a diy audio fan at heart and i'm not just sticking this thing into a random box with a port. It is going to be carefully configured to sound great in my car...

that being said i'd like to see pics of how much space there is below the kit compartment, if any exist. I need approx .75 cubic feet for a decent sub box. It can go a bit smaller since there will be a ton of cabin gain going on...

Your not gonna get any sort of clean 30hz. I've given you the link for the sub; and it's most likely the best design for a car I've seen. be sure to use an amp with atleast 300watts RMS/4ohms with somewhere around .01% THD.

-As for the entire 100ft thing; you DO realize how long a 30hz wave is, right?
