Anyone do a Double DIN conversion in a W210

Hey guys I just picked up a W210 97 E300 D. I really miss having an in dash navigation unit in my car, so I am thinking about attempting a double din retro fit of an Eclipse avn5435 touchscreen navigation unit. I found the site below about retrofitting in a Comand Unit, and wanted to see if anyone could confirm that it will hold a standard double din unit. Also does anyone know of a good source for the back plastic piece and wood trim?

Thanks!
Zack

Try contacting Steve at www.mbenznl.com.

He can answer all of your questions, and he even sells the replacement wood trim pieces to fit the double din.

I believe he also installs Command Navi units that were equipped on the ML class cars in your 1997 E class. ML navi units didn't use a CAN bus, which will work in your car.

Even though the Command navi was offered in 2000 and newer E class cars, it can be retrofitted back to 1998 models.

here's the best alternative. pretty good and gives blue tooth hands free as well.

I'm not sure if it's the best alternative.... I too have a 1997 and will install an after market double din radio which will give me navigation on a hard disk with full touch screen control. It will play DVD's and control my IPOD and is blue tooth compatible. This more current approach as aposed to the Comand is a great solution that wont require sacrificing AM radio. Since my system is already custom and the head unit is the last component to be changed. I previously wanted to maintain a stock look after replacing the Bose amp and speakers. With the ipod I wont miss the CDC.
