help, Newbie wants good sound on 107
Hi!
I want to enrich the overall sound of my 380 SL, I have a CD player installed and originals speakers. Consider I drive with top down most of the time. Can I just change the speakers, add other 2 on the doors and a Subwoofer maybe? Not idea, budget about $350 Thank you for any advise. Rick |

what kind of deck is in there now(preouts)?
4.5"s in the dash up front? what is the rear layout for that rig? (seats and sidewalls? for that budget, you could pick up dash speaks, a smaller 4ch amp, figure out some rear speaks.. and think about a sub down the road. how good do you want it to really sound..:grin2: |

I have a CD player installed (JVC KD-S590 180W) and originals speakers I think they are 4.5''s.
I have lot of empty space behind the seats, and the door panel as well. I want really good sound, but for me, not the neihgbors, know what I mean? I been fixing quite few things in the car and now is time to have a better sound. What type of speakers do you suggest? Thank you |

A properly tuned Infinity basslink and some Infinity Kappa 6.5" door speakers will do wonders for your setup. The Basslink is not obnoxious but clean and low. The Kappas will deliver crisp highs and the proper midbass.
I run Kappas and Infinity subs in my Silverado. I run Kappas and a Basslink in my MB. The Basslink fits under the passenger seat and the Kappas are in the rear deck. I have bass blockers (small capacitors) connected to the front stockers to prevent distortion. Although not as violent as my Silverado (1500 watts) it is concert clear and very responsive. |

The upgrades I have seen are better speakers in the front, and installing speakers in the rear storage area, unless you have the "kinder seat". There ia a little room for smaller speakers in the lower part of the side liners. Once you cut that, its permanent and the liners are hard to come by. The same goes for the doors, while the carpeted panel can be repaired, or maybe you can find one. I think Performance Products, had the upgrade

This is what I did
Audio Upgrade to my 86 560SL No Humps.
It would be hard to do this for $350 but if you found a good sale you would be close. With the top down you loose a lot of bass gain so I do not disturb the neighbors even with this setup. My mother in law lives accross the street and she would let me know about it if it was too loud. Do not try to put speakers in the back side panels. The PO tried to put in 6x9's but there was not enough depth. I have not had the door skins off but from the pictures I have seen there is not much room in there. Since you say you go topless most of the time if you do not have a windscreen putting speakers in the rear will be a waste unless you can point them forward. You could hang a pair of 6x9 boxes on the rear panel. The stock front speakers are 3.5" but 4" will fit. The Performance Product upgrade looks nice but I have not heard it or seen any reviews of it. But because the speaker point up not forward I do not think it would be worth it. My previous setup was this way and I was not very happy with it. |
