Upgrading the radio in the W140
Hi,
In my 1998 S500 I found a radio http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180100211205&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RCRX_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT&refitem=18010 0210563&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=active_view_item&usedrule1=CrossSell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_pro mot_widget that I bought for the car.Is this a ten disc in dash, which means I do not need a cd changer? Is it easy to install this radio by myself and how do I do it? -Thanks

Looks to me that "Audio 10" is just a name. I think it only plays one CD in dash, and can control a cd changer.

Looks like a nice radio. Likely it's going to look nice sitting on a shelf, too, because installing it in your 140-chassis car will probably be more work than you want to undertake.
The auction states that the radio is from a 99 C-Class, and should fit seemingly every model of mercedes, except the 140. Maybe you'll get lucky and be able to pull your old unit an plug this one in, but I would be very surprised. My '92 300SE is of the same chassis as your car, and the wiring for the original radio setup was monstrously complicated. No way to even think about swapping an aftermarket, or even MB OEM radio from another car. My decision was easy, as the car came without the radio head unit - all I had left was the radio controller in the trunk and the amp, and a bunch of mangled/cut wiring. I just started from scratch with aftermarket components. Good luck. |

One thing you might have to consider is how the radio connects.
By that I mean is it a regular connection or a fiber optic connection? In 1998 in the W210 and other chassis (but not all chassis), Mercedes went to a fiber optic connection for the radio and cd changer. The auction states that the radio came from a 1999 C class car, and I don't know if the W202 cars also changed to the fiber optic connectivity. If I were to guess, I'd say no, since 2000 is the last year of that chassis.

It might not! 92-95 were almost impossible, 95 and up went to a one piece radio and did have the antenna lead up front, I have no idea how to handle the bose amp issue, Audio 10 is a label not an indication of capacity, It will fit the opening but the rest is up to you, I would have done some research before buying!
