'92 Radio/Head Unit into '87, ... "Security" wire?
I'd like to put my '92 radio w/ CD changer in my '87. Will I need a code for the '92 radio once removed or is it like the '87 radio that simply needs to be connected to the car properly?
On the properly connected part: I believe that the radio is destroyed if not hooked to the security wire before being powered up, it seems that the security wire is a wire connecting two connectors together on the rear of the radio? Does this go to ground or to +12v? It doesn't show this in the FSM, and I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good radio/head unit. Thanks,

That would be a very difficult swap. While the two systems look very similar, they are actually very different. The 92 has the two piece system with the amplifiers and receiver in the rear and active bass speakers in the front doors, while the 87 has the 4 speaker system with the amplifiers in the head unit. You would have to transfer all the cabling that runs from the head unit to the amps/receiver in the rear. The speaker wires would also have to be rerouted to the rear, as would the antenna cable. Not sure if there is adequate power back there either, so that also might have to be run. Might as well go with an aftermarket amplified head unit with CD.

The head unit is from a 92 or 93 (can't remember) 190, has the amplifier in the head unit and a din cable to the changer. Most of the wires are obvious, the speaker wires plug right in, I'm mostly worried about the security wire as you only get one chance with that.
