I need to yank out the factory phone on my E320. It's in the center console and has the handsfree above the rearview mirror. Receiver is in the trunk. Has anyone done this before? What parts spcifically should I look to keep when I take it out in case someone wants to buy a old analog phone? If someone thinks it's worth anything, I'll post to sell it for cheap.

I ripped out the old OKI phone in my '84 300D, lock, stock and barrell, but not until it was too late. The screws holding the trunk unit to the baffle behind the fuel tank wore into the fuel tank and caused a leak. Not sure if this is a danger with your car or not...but who would want an old analog phone like that?

Phone Removal
 

I just removed a factory phone from my 260e. I clipped all the wires and stuffed them out of view. I don't think the phone has much value anymore. One thing still remaining is the antenna on the rear window. It seems like the wire passes through the glass and I'm afraid to pry too hard on the parts.

If anyone knows how to remove the window mounted antenna, please let me know.

I had a post about my old walker phone a few weeks back and got some responce! I think they look kind of cool sort of like old James Bond stuff. And seveal people said if you could find a server that they worked much better than those (new fangled digital ones) out in the boonies, witch is where I live . Maybe there's a club in the making here! "save your Confererate money Boys" the analog phone will rise again.and how in the world would you patch that hole in the rear window.....

Antenna removal
 

Hey John,
The antenna does not pass through the glass, but rather there are two adhesive backed components to that antenna system.
Basically the coupling box (on the inside of the glass) has the wire coming off of it, and the acutal aerial or whip is on the outside. both pieces are just stuck on. Usually with 3M double sided tape, although the installer who had done my 90 190E had used silicone. All you need to do, is pry away both parts, and the antenna will come off. You can use a small flathead to help it off if needed. Be careful not to scratch the glass, or chip it, just take ur time, get one corner up and keep going, they can be pretty stubborn, but they are just stuck on there.

You both have older cars with different phones. Mine has the newer Motoralla phone setup. Though analog, I want to still remove it nicely so I don't screw anything up. I know the wire in the back runs up to the dual voice coil dash speaker for the audio of the phone, so disconnecting that so it doesn't honk when I turn the car on will be easy. I'll remove it and post it for sale anyways, something is better than nothing I guess. Thanks for the responses

I removed the phone from my 1992 300CE. All I had to do was unplug the hand set unit, and then unplug the trunk unit and I was done.

The unit in the ceiling I left because well I will replace it later with soemthing real cool, like an LCD Screen with rear vision camera or something.. :) hehe

There was the question of the hole in my center console, so I just shoved the plastic clip for my nextel phone into the slot, and I now have a nifty holder for my phone in the car. :)

like to remove it, as I've never even activated it. (Already
have two cell phones...)

It has a handset in the console, a "head unit" below the
radio, plus the microphone near the rear view mirror.

Anyone know how to remove it? Anyone want to buy it?

I have one in my 560 SEL, nice set-up and all, but I don't have service.

Thought about taking it out, but since my wife will be using it for work in the fall, I'll just get service for it and buy another phone all for "cheap" piece of mind.

I work for a telco/ISP and one of the engineers told me these are great phones, (AKA Motorola "bag phones"). Much more powerful than current units. Dated - yes, and not digi ready of course.

One of my friends was on the engineering team for Lucent back when they were devoloping digital switches (ESS) and REFUSES to buy a cell phone, as he was so disgusted with the markup for service. He just assume deal with the suprises of life and use a pay phone ;)

In response to removing the phone from the 95 and 98, the best course of action would be to get a copy of the installation instructions so you know what was done to put it in there to begin with. These shouldn't be too hard to obtain, most any shop should be able to photocopy the original or print it out on WIS. On the 98, I can't remember now if the IDC was put into that compartment or not, I believe it was though, so the compartment will still be there ready to accept garbage after the IDC is removed. On the 124 controller, again,I'm not sure what was done to put it up there, if you will need to buy new parts for up there or not.

Steady pressure on a small putty knife and the antenna parts came right off the window. I didn't even damage the rear defroster wires on the inside.

Twenty years from now, collectors will jump for joy because they found a 19xx MB with an undisturbed original factory phone.

Essentially, all the wiring required to activate one of those installed phones was included in every W124; to bring the phone live required only to install the handset, transponder in the trunk, and fit the overhead controller. To remove, simply take the individual parts out and leave the wiring in place-it'll do no harm.

I was lucky enough to find a digital version of the phone you're looking to remove, and it took only a few minutes to install it in my '92 500E as all of the wiring's already there. My overhead console memories don't work any more, but the rest of the buttons do!
