Antenna Masts - Toothed vs. Non-Toothed
I own two 300SDs (and '81 and '82). A few years ago I had to replace the antenna mast on the '82. I had a non-toothed or smooth nylon shaft version of the antenna mast on that car and replaced it with a toothed version. At the time I was led to believe that the toothed version was the only one available. It has performed quite well for me.
I have just replaced the antenna mast on the '81 which likewise had a smooth version of the antenna mast. Again the replacement was a toothed version. The new mast works well except that I get a slight but quick "squoink" noise when the mast goes up and again when it goes down. Are the two styles of antenna masts interchangeable? Do I need to be looking for a couple of non-toothed style antenna masts? Since both antennas appear to be working well, should I worry about this at all?
