lost sound from rear speakers- 1988 300ce

I don't know if the PO bypassed the fader switch or not- he had speaker boxes in the back seat wired into the rear deck units; I disconnected and removed the boxes. Is there a way to jumper the fader switch socket to see if it is connected and working? I'm thinking maybe my fader switch went bad. Otherwise, I guess I have to either trace the wires through the back seat for breaks or pop the head unit (for which I don't have the removal tool-it is a blaupunkt san diego, connected to a cm5 changer mounted in the trunk). Thanks.
