Subwoofer in 124 Trunk
I want to replace the subwoofer boxes in my trunk with some smaller powered unit or units. I don't need to wake up my neighbors or have a contest with anyone. Does anybody have experience or a recommendation for using one (or two) of the smaller powered subs like the blaupunkt in the trunk of a 124 sedan or coupe?

I'm not sure which ones you are looking at but I would probably recommend something with at least 100W, if not more. The trunk is sealed, and it'll take some energy to get the bass through. The Infinity Basslink would probably be a decent choice.

I have the best buy 'Dual' brand subs in a bandpass enclosure with a 425W MTX amp.
Enough bass to vibrate the interior, the previous setup was the same dual subs/enlcosure with a 1400W amp and it would wake the dead! So much bass i couldnt hear the vocals. The subs could handle high power (600W RMS) But it was a toss between a sony xplod 250W amp and the 425W MTX amp. Both hit the subs well but i chose the MTX for that extra juice but didnt really need it the 250W amp was just fine. My current setup in my W124: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8359616&type=product&id=1177112903683 http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/archive/thunder302.cfm

124 Subwoofer
I ended up removing the brandless amps and two 8 inch kicker subs in two boxes and putting in a Kenwood 500 at 2/300 at 4 amp and a Polk Audio Momo ten inch sub in a QLogic box. I mounted the amp directly onto the box. It's pretty amazing, no neighbor waking, but very nice bass and it feels like it's coming from all over the car. The kickers had sort of vibrated the whole thing without letting you discern nice bass lines in the music and also made lyrics hard to catch. I also put in a new Kenwood head unit which lets me control the gain from my seat, no pulling over to adjust. The old ones were such a pain and so crappy, I had them unplugged for months at a time.

Its amazing how proud some owners are of their subs vibrating the whole car. Sound like crap to me, besides its their ear drums they are shaking loose too. It seems for them quantity is more important then quality these days. Oh well...

I was trying to get a lot out of the audio system. I changed out the following when I got the car:
1) JBL tweeters in front without crossover cojoint with the front 2 way JBL Speakers. 2) Rear stock speakers were swapped out component speakers when 1 side failed. 3) 2 x 10 inch subs were slapped at the back in the boot with a dedicated 800W Amp 4) Then the nakamichi MB75 that I paid 100GBP to keep it in the car from the dealer decided to keep the CDs and not change nor spit them out. Had to changed to a Sony HU with USB. That was the most convenient HU IMO. 5) Then I realised that I need an amp to drive the interior speakers and get a 100w amp. After which the front JBL 2 way decided that they cannot handle the high input and sputters when bassy music was plyed. Had to changed them out as well. 6)Then the installer coaxed me into buying another seperate fuse set for the power line to the rear..... 7) After the entire setup was assembled, there was a high pitch whine when the engine was reved.... I had to cut the SNR to minimise the effect..... 8) Thinking that I had too much noise from the road, I started doing sound proofing on the doors and door wells with noise insulating cotton. I didn't put damping material as my engine is serverely underpowered. 9) Lastly the noise that I had always thought sound proofing would solved was rid off by the replacement of the motor mounts and trans mount. 10) Now after 500GBP later, I seem to have a nice setup to listen to but not really ICE standard. I hope that helps.... It was a 8 months journey to do all the above.

Wow, 800 watts and dual subs. I can barely stand to turn the gain on mine over +3 or +5, I hate the hum and eardrum vibration of really heavy bass. I think I'd have to turn yours on a negative setting.
Are big subs popular in the UK?

watts is a useless measurement, It's only used for matching amps to speakers (rms x1.5 for proper headroom)
It's the sensitivity of the speaker/enclosure that matters, It's how that setup will uses the power given. A sealed cab is the worst, it has no low-frequency extension what-so-ever; just a bump at 100Hz (the drum range, what rattles the car and shakes the license plate loose) You want to select an amp with high S/N (100db is GREAT) and .01% THD.

I dont see anybody on these forums using capacitors. These things are wonderful. When you hit some louder bass the capacitor will aid the amp and the bass will sound much more clearer. And if you have a line that is very repetitive like drum after drum then It wont sound mushy. For those who want great sounding bass this is a must. It also helps the alternator and takes strain off it. If you don't get what I mean just google car audio capacitor.

These last two posts are pretty informative. I'm going to be shopping for a sub setup for my E500 soon and I will likely find use for the information. Thanks!

I was at an installer today asking about putting in my New Pioneer HU, and 4 speakers w/ my 1st power amp ever into my "new" '87 190E.
I am totally new to this, as I am one of those who still owns old Grateful Dead bootleg casettes..... Anyways I was curious about how a sub in the trunk would sound with "normal" music. ( not wigger rap...) So one of the techs was nice enough to take me into his car with a set up that I am sure cost him twice as much as the car. I had to ask him three X for him to put on normal music that didn't suck. Either he didn't grasp that, or he couldn't hear me over pdiddy.....When I got him (he was a nice guy..) to put on the radio I was sold. Normal rock actually sounds excellent with a good sub. Now I know he had a capacitor, and like 2 14" or so subs, with the p amp, 2 6x9 MB Quarts in the rear deck..... So I am returning the 4 ch Blaupunkt & now in my 190E I will be installing 2 - 4" Infinity Reference 4022i's in the dash; 2- 6.5" MB Quart DKG 116s; the HU is a Pioneer Premier DEH-P690UB; the Power amp is now a 5 channel 770 Watt Hifonics ZXi 8006; and the "thuump in the trunk" will be a 10" Boston Acoustics G210-44. I am actually looking forward to cranking up good ol decent R&R in the little 5 speed.... AA ............ [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] ..

The last 6 posts make little to no sense, and here's why:
1. vegadonovan - Who installs tweeters without a crossover? Anything under 2K Hz will over drive these and burn them out. What a waste of money. 2. 800 watts and dual 10" subs can be very loud, or not really at all depending on the quality of the amp (whether it is really putting 800 watts out) and the install of the subs. Also, if his trunk is sealed off from the cabin (as a lot of Mercedes are) it may not be that loud in the car. 3. Watts is a useless measurement - yes and no. With the new standards for measuring amp power (CEA2006), this is now a valid measurement. A sealed box may be the worst as far as sensitivity, but it is the easiest to build, takes up the least amount of space, and usually has the best low end extension, because of the lack of roll off that you see with ported and bandpass boxes. Those are tuned to a certain frequency, and below that, output drops off sharply. A sealed box, properly sized, is only limited by the driver. Also, a high S/N ratio in a car amplifier, while a nice feature, is a fairly useless one, as the ambient noise floor is very high in a car compared to a home. THD is a highly overrated stat in car amps, as anything below .1% cannot be heard in a car, and if you look at the stats for class D sub amps, you will find that most are rated at that level or higher. 4. Capacitors are HIGHLY overrated. The logic that a cap will smooth out the electrical drain on your system, only works to a point. The best solution is a better battery, or a higher output alternator. An Optima Red Top battery can be had for about $100 at Costco, and will to much better things for your car as well as your audio system, than a cap. For a good basis to car audio, visit http://www.bcae1.com/. I did not mean to sound harsh, but thought my head would explode. /rant |

Wind out of the Sails..............
Wow.
So now that I ordered this big amp and a fairly nice 10" BA Subwoofer, What is the best way or place to install this in a 190E ??? Do I just cancel the order, and stick with the conventional HU amp and 4 speakers???? aa....
