Crazy idea?? 560sel
Hi to all,
I recently bought a 1989 560sel in nice shape (this one is my 3rd w126) I am planning on this one being a keeper so I am doing a lot of repairs and some upgrades to keep it usable. Here's the question, I want to install a Double DIN head unit with touch screen and GPS, it looks like it would be a easyish fit with the ashtray removed has anyone attempted this conversion?? Also, taking this one stage further, given that there is enough space to get a double DIN unit in there, is there any reason that the panel containing the AC controls and switches could not be moved down leaving the head unit at the top of the space where it would be easier the see and use. BTW I am planning on installing the Eclipse head unit Any input would be appreciated Regards Gerry Last edited by GerryB; 09-29-2007 at 04:29 PM. Reason: spelin |

A couple of examples, although not as extensive as you have planned, are at www.mbcoupes.com
Click on W126 SEC then chose members cars. Members Larry Antinone and Jamey Haley have interesting mods here. I have run accross an extensive mod where an SEC owner removed everything you plan on doing and went vertical with the AC controls. I forgot where I saw this photo. Ebay I think. If I find it I will let you know. |

Gerry, I just had a double din Pioneer unit installed in my w124. Did the same thing removed the ashtray. I'm not going to lie, there was some cutting involved, probably wasn't the wisest thing I've done. And I still have to make up a wood surround to finish things off so it looks factory. But would I do it again?
YES I'll post pictures tomorrow. Joe |

Hi guys,
Thanks for the responses, the links were useful and I'd love to see a picture Joe, I am going to be pulling my Becker unit today and investigating whether there is enough space behind the current HVAC panel to get the Head unit mouted in the higher position, when I have figured that out I'll be dropping a temporary single din unit in while I shop for the Eclipse unit and trim to make it look somewhat stock.
