Angry Problem with my new car's stereo

My "new" 1994 E500 has an aftermarket head, a Pioneer with XM, I'm not sure of the model. But the speakers only work on the passenger side, and sometimes only in the rear on the passenger side. Anybody have any troubleshooting suggestions? I haven't opened anything up to see if the speakers are the original Bose or something aftermarket.

If you have a multimeter, pop the trunk and see if you have access to the speaker terminals for the rear speakers. Check the DC voltage on the driver's side rear speaker, and if you get a reading, that will tell you if your headunit is good or bad. Does it cut out when you go over bumps? If so, then it could just be a loose connection either at the speaker, or at the CD player.
Do some poking around first, and then I might be able to tell you what it is.

My 500E ('92) was that way. Turned out 7 of the speakers in the car had the cones so torn and degraded they worked (if you can call it that) only a small amount of the time. How they made any sound at all was amazing. The onlys I did not have to replace where the subs in the front doors. I thought it was my head unit as well. Check the speakers.. if they are stock they are likely beyond death.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll start by visually inspecting the speakers. I'm familiar with the dash and rear deck speaker covers, but how do you get the door speaker covers off?
