How do I remove the radio?

Again, don't want to break anything. How do I remove the Becker Europa? It's not working and I wanna fix it. Is it a good stereo sound wise? I am happy with just a cassette. I assume that's an OEM radio and has some value being original?

You can usualy get them out underneath if you remove the ash try. It should be just a friction fit.

The stock sound system in these cars is trash and continued to be that way until MB started to include BOSE with a decent number of speakers. I have nothing good to say about the stock radio or speakers.

If you look at the pic, you'll see the ash tray and the metal surround behind it has been removed. I pulled the knobs off and yanked on the radio panel face and it didn't give. I also felt underneath the radio for release clips but didn't "feel" any. So, what's the trick?

An old radio like that is going to be hard to fix unless its something obvious. Even if it seems obvious at first its often a multi-fault condition. Be ready to put in something newer - a good radio can be had for $100 bucks. If you spend $200 youll get something fairly nice.

The real weak link are the speakers and the way they are mounted. You need to do some real re-design and figuring to get a big improvement. I may tackle this at some point, but not yet.

The Bose systems in the later models are stunning. But i'm *really* biased. In the era in which these cars were conceived, car audio was not a priority for anyone. Bose invented the concept of of a high quality car audio system for Caddy in the early 80's and its gone from there.

Its also because MB decided to include more than 4 dinky speakers. The new ones have like 20, and amps to power them.

It became a priority that consumers put a premium on. I dont know how much the bose option was during the late 90s, but it was a lot.

I agree - fixing it isn't worth the effort IMHO.

Stab it with a screwdriver and pull

That radio should just slide out. It is a tight friction fit because of a thin metal surround piece that practically covers the entire radio shell.

can you see the bottom of the radio? sometimes there is a screw dead center in the bottom of the radios... worth a look anyway. what is that metal plate under the radio in your pic? mine looks different in the ashtray area.

hmm, maybe I had to lift the center console up, and remove the entire ashtray surround to get the radio out... not sure is was a while ago... I could go look in the morning.

Ok, there is no screw on the bottom, There are 2 spring clips that are not detented into the radio and is providing spring loaded friction to keep the radio in place. I was able to grab the lip of the cassette door opening and pull it out. The red wire to the radio has no power, fuse on the radio is ok so I have to trouble shoot the power.

Have another question. In pic below, my finger is pointing to the cig lighter connector. What are the other 2 connectors for? There's no power on them. Mind you this is an 83 240D.

That plugs into the ashtray mount bracket. It is for your lighter.

That is correct and that is what I said it was. My question is what are the othe 2 white connectors for? All 3 of them can't plug into cig lighter connector at the same time. Agree?
