W123 power antenna
After replacing my mast, I am having trouble getting my power antenna to go up and down. opening it up it looks like there are two sets of gears on top of each other... the top one is spinning, but the bottom one isn't... What's wrong?
Also, anyone with an 85 300D, I would appreciate it if you could take a picture of your power antenna in the trunk of your car.. It looks like somehow my bracket was just bent WAY out of shape... maybe one of my kids??

My W123 antennas look like the one in the above link. Are you sure you have the correct one installed?

well, there's no way to tell for sure, because the antenna was there before I bought the car...
but everything fitting before I tried to replace the mast tells me that it was close enough to the right one

It does look like the '85 is different from my '82 and '83:

Can you post a pic of your antenna? Any identifying name or numbers printed on it? My W123 looks like the one in the link.

I took the pics but I am having some problems staying connected to the internet now. I did tear the mechanism further down to find that there is sort of a wire spring "buffer" coil *thingy* that connects the two gears, and for me, a piece broke off of the top gear so that the bottom gear just spins freely. I still have the old motor (but I went outside about 10 minutes ago and couldn't seem to find it) so when I do find it I will check to see if the top gear is good on that one...
if not, I am wondering why there would need to be a spring between the two gears... why couldn't I just screw them together?

It's there to keep the gears from jolting too much when the mast reaches the top, or bottom of it's travel. Basically, it keeps the teeth from stripping off, as near as I can tell. Interesting how the design backfires, eh? I have a Hirschmann just like that in my collection, but I haven't spent any time messing with it, yet.
In my research, I've discovered folks that actually screwed and glued the two gears together, and it worked okay. No word on whether rigidly fixing the gears to each other is a long-lasting solution, however.

when I took mine apart in my 84 there is belt and the gears are pulleys. Are you missing the belt? I ordered a new belt from Stock Drive Products for $3

The gear in my original was still good so I swapped them. I made some pictures to make sort of a DIY, but then I realized that the problems would probably be pretty different for each unit...

Try this link for a diagram of your antenna. It helped me when I was cleaning and repairing my Hirshcmann.
