The only thing I replaced was the head unit. I replaced it with a Blaupunkt Munchen. I'm looking for a basic system, to possible be expanded on later. I was thinking along the lines of the systems in the later 124's-- up to '95 E320. I'm not familiar with them but I assume there is no subwoofer. I was thinking of replacing all 4 speakers, and maybe installing speakers in the doors, like in the '95-- would the door installation be expensive? Did the '95 have separate amps? From what someone told me, the speakers on the doors had subwoofers built into them? Anyway, I'm looking for the most bang I can get for the buck. Any brand names and suggestions would be appreciated.

EMR50:
I was going to go whole hog on the stereo on my 87 300E, but the recent purchase of a 98 c230 ate my budget for the foreseeable future . So I have reinstalled the old head unit for now. As I get a little ahead again, I plan on putting 4 1/2" diamond audio or 4" Boston Acoustics in the front and running them off the head unit.

For now I unearthed some old 4 1/2" Concord speakers that sound better than the stock speakers, even if they aren't in the same ballpark as the Diamonds or Bostons. For a sub, I plan on leaving out the rear speakers, and installing an Infinity BassLink in the trunk (1 10" passive, 1 10" active sub, 200Watt amp, 0.75' enclosure)

http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.asp?ProdId='BASSLINK'

This will give me better sound than I started with until I can get the Nakamichi head unit and built-in sub system. I have seen the Bostons and Diamonds for less than $100/pair, and the BassLink for $260 at 'TheZeb.com'
Hope this helps.

I was reading in one post that said that the more you cut into the rear deck, the more road noise you get. Is this true? Can a sub be installed in the rear deck that doesn't let in road noise?I want my future system to be absolute stealth--I won't remove the first aid kit,for instance.
