W124 in-dash speakers

A while back someone posted a link to aftermarket speakers (MB Quarts? Eclipse?) that are a drop-in installation in the W124 dash.

The post also mentioned a price of around $150/pair.

Of course, I did not bookmark the post.

Anyone here remember that specific post? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Rainbows are drop in fit.

http://www.iqcaraudio.com/mercedes/mercedes_W124.htm

I fitted 5.25 infinity kappa's in my dash with a little bit of cutting but not much. And they fit perfectly under the speaker cover.

That's the link. Thanks!

(I am too lazy, and unskilled, to do any type of cutting. It is drop-in or nothing for me!)

Is this for your wagon or your new 300CE?

You can make a small little bracket to mount a set of 4 inch speakers in the front... It will sound better than the rainbows.

I have a set of Infinity Components in the front, and they sound FANTASTIC.

For the yet-to-be 300CE.

We are still negotiating...I want to let the buyer simmer for a bit longer.

You made the brackets yourself? Did you take pictures before installing?

BTW missed at the Sacto mini-GTG. I was hoping you could join JimB on his journey South.

I wanted to make the trip too, but my grandmothers health wasn't the best...

Yes, I did make them myself. It took a whole 10 minutes a side with simple tools... I need to make another set for a friend, I can make a pictorial if you need! Measurements too. If I have enough material, I can make you a set too if you want.

Is IQ Car Audio still in business or has anyone ordered from them recently? I want some Rainbow front speakers for my E420 and emailed them a few months ago with some questions. No one ever replied so it made me nervous about doing business with them.

The 4's arent a direct fit, but like I said, a bracked can be made, fairly easily that makes it a drop in.

Ernesto, I can take pix this weekend of the whole thing when we do it to my friends E420. And like I said, the offer is still open for me to make you a bracket for your car...

I bought a pair of rainbows from them a few years ago, and they were really good about responding to questions and customer issues. Since then, it looks like the site is up for sale, and they haven't responded to more recent emails I've sent about other purchases.

My installer in Laguna Hills, CA installed a set of Polk Audio speakers that were a perfect drop-in fit. These speakers had adjustable tweeters, so you could aim the sound in just the right spot. They were sweet.

This guy is just down the street from the Mercedes dealer in Laguna Hills, just a few blocks away from the Laguna Hills mall.

He has done all of the audio work on the cars from this Mercedes dealer for years. He is also an authorized Becker shop, and knows these cars inside and out.

If you'd like, I can get you his contact info. I think his shop is called Safeguard Sound and Security.

I am sure I have posted his info before if you are good with the search function.

Ernesto - I'll go a little against the flow here and ask why you are looking to replace them?

Unless they are physically damaged, the stock speakers are good. What really counts IMO is proper amplification and the head unit.

When I had my 300E, I added a sub in the trunk, two Alpine amps and an Alpine head unit. One amp powered the sub, the other amp was a 4-channel and it powered the stock speakers.

The system sounded very good. Plenty of mids and highs. A slight gap in the lows between what the stock 4" (actually 118 mm or 120 mm IIRC) could output and the highest response of the sub (~80 Hz). This is more a physical characteristic of a 4" speaker - a different brand won't help much.

So, if all you are doing is dropping in another 4" speaker and not changing the amplification, etc., I wouldn't expect you are going to notice a huge change. A more 'modern' coax speaker may appear to sound more 'bright' but that could simply be a baised high-end output, rather than a more balanced output.

If this is the later W124 system with the door speakers, I can't really comment as I don't know that system and I understand it does have stock amps installed.

Good luck with the car!
