Good portable GPS?

Any recommendations for a good GPS device? I know I want text-to-speech capability, but other than that not too many frills (if that is considered a frill).

When I go into a store to look at them, I just glaze over. There are too many to choose from, and the people working at these stores seem never to know anything much about the products. I'd like to not spend over $200.00 if possible.

Garmin is popular. TomTom seems to dominate the lower end of the market. Don't know if you're gonna get TTS for less than $200.

I was at Circuit City last week and they seemed to have product from $200 to $700...certainly a broad range.

I picked up a used Magellan for $50...the thing kicks butt. It doesn't leave me wanting for anything.

When I walked into a Radio Shack last night, the guy working there told me they had one (a Mio, I think) for $150.00 that had text-to-speech. I wasn't sure if he really knew what he was taking about, though.

Great! You can tell me what I need to know about LCD HDTV's as we're walking past them on the way to the GPS's, too.

I really kind of miss the days when buying a TV or a stereo was fairly simple . . . .

I have been going crazy looking for a GPS too!

I found some good deals on ecost.com, but everyone I looked at has issues. For example my realtor has a Garmin Nuvi 250 and it workes well most of the time. It did get lost in the wilds of Jefferson County, WV calling for turns where there was no road. However, if we kept driving it would recalcualte and usually sterr us back on course.

I am in desparate need of one as I am tired of being lost in this area all the time...

I am leaning toward the Garmin Nuvi 360 or the next step up from there, but the costs get high really fast.

Let me know which one you pick!

Thumbs up

Good pal of mine has a Garmin, works well. Gal I'm dating just picked up the TomTom for her Pop, he seems to like it also.

See if the stores have a return policy if you are displeased with the item.

I've got a Garmin Street Pilot 330, other than being a little on the bulky side, works great for me. Best Buy had the Garmin Nuvi ?? on the front page of the last flyer for $199.

I think that text-to-speech is one feature that is particularly important to me. If I understand what I've read correctly, that is the feature that speaks the street names in the directions (Turn left on Garfield Ave, etc.). Other than that, it seems they vary in terms of number of points of interest, size of screen, Bluetooth capability, and stuff like playing music thru them somehow.

I'm just looking for directions.

Mine doesn't give the street names, but gives you enough warning to make a turn, "In 3tenths of a mile turn right" "In 300 feet turn right" "turn right"

I thinnk I may go ahead and order a couple of Mio C230's. It has gotten good reviews on Cnet and other places, has text-to-speech, and I can get them for under $200. I haven't found anything better so far in all my looking.

Go to CompUsa and check them out in person. They are stocked up for Christmas, and I was amazed at the price drops in just the last 6 months.

CompUSA? Didn't they just go out of business? The one near me closed last year sometime.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I have already bought the Mio C230 and am pretty happy with it.
