Question about car audio
I am 25, in the Army, losing my hearing, and have 2 kids + 1 on the way.
I want to improve my audio system, but I don't want to give my first born, she's the good one.. I've been told to beware cheap systems, but no one has been able to tell me why.. Right now I have speakers that look like xplods, but are not,the back ones are red and not covered, the front ones are yellow, and the speaker covers don't quite screw down all the way. The Eclipse stereo runs through the factory fader... I imagine the factory wiring was reused... I want features. I make a lot of long trips and listen to audio books, I want a stereo that plays mp3's. I would like at least a USB input and a line it on the front, but a straight up ipod cable would be nice too. Somehow I must have caused a short somewhere because sometimes (especially on accessory or when the car is just sitting there running) the CD player starts to repeatedly "reboot" it plays about a second of the CD then it says HELLO and plays another couple seconds... I figure if I am going to have to renew this POS I might as well replace it with something more useful to me! What problems will I experience if I buy the Ebay or Walmart special? Are there brands to stay away from?

Sony Mex-1gp
Has anyone ever seen anything like this??!! You actually pull the panel off and hook it up to your computer like a hard drive, add songs to it, then take it back out to your car and you can play them..
AWESOME!

well if you already have an ipod i would trash that idea. For the head unit it sounds like a loose connection. If you are interested in a new head unit this is the one i have and it is great. Kenwood Excelon X-591. this is part of kenwoods premier product line. It also has an optional ipod hook up for it, and you can control the ipod through the headunit.
you can get the unit on ebay for under $130 and the optional ipod hook up is like around 50 i think. graet product easy to navigate menu's. As for the wiring. just run all new stuff. it takes like 30 minutes to run all the wiring in w123. to run wires to rear deck speakers you have to remove the back seat but that is really easy. two buttons on bottom of seat push in then take bottom seat out. back rest is like 3 screws two on each side one under arm rest.then push seat up, its held on by hooks at the top. then you can run the wires under the carpet on both sides there are small holes on the floor where the bottom seat sites on under the carpet on the floor are holes to run the wires through. get some car grade speaker wire of ebay "Stinger HPM" you can get the 50 foot roll for like $20. And just skip the fader you wont need it with this unit it has a fader built-in. if you have any more questions just PM me |

Personally, I think my ipod is a HUGE POS. I have sent it in for service 4 times and on the 4th time I get a refurbished unit.. I haven't even taken it out of the box yet.
The good thing about the flash memory in this unit, is that it isn't a little tiny hard drive (many parts to break when it gets dropped) it's flash memory which wouldn't be sensitive to any shock that didn't break components in the face
