Well, I'd like some sound quality. I'm not sure how to explain it, but in its current state, I feel like I can't really hear the stereo in my car. I think the primary problems are:

1. Not enough bass.

2. Not enough midrange power.

3. Dash speakers are not giving out sufficient high-frequency sound. They only seem to at really high volumes.

As for music, I have weird car tastes. My absolutely favorite song to have blasting is Holiday in the Sun. Lots of other 70s 80s English punk and power pop. I also like lots of reggae and dancehall. All of these need stronger midrange and bass than the stock setup (with an aftermarket Pioneer h/u) provide.

Alright, so it sounds like sound quality inside of the car is much more important to you than overall loudness... Doesn't sound like you want your whole neighbor hood to hear your music. To be honest, it sounds like your doing everything right. You have a very good quality amplifier and head unit. Adding a subwoofer should take care of your bass needs.

If money is an issue for you, then you can definitely try powering the stock speakers with your amp. I have already stated the reasons why I wouldn't recommend this, so I don't need to repeat them.

A few more reasons why I think you should put in new speakers. First off, it is most likely that you will be running new speaker wire to your speakers anyway, since you are installing an amp. With all the work and disassembly this will take, it makes since to replace the stock speakers (especially the dash) while you already working on them. Secondly, you can get some very decent speakers without breaking the bank. I know that you can pick up two pairs of Alpine Type S speakers for around $120 off of eBay or a discount retailer like hookedontronics.com (I have had only great experiences with them)

From my experience with these speakers, they have some very good puchy bass response. Their midrange and highs are just as great.
With your new headunit, you will have plenty of equalization options to shape your music the way that you like it.

So I guess it really depends on your financial situation. Either way you decide to go, there will be a tremendous improvement over the factory system. The factory system completely lacks desirable bass response, and using the bass boost makes your music sound so muddy it is almost unbearable.:eek:

Can anyone comment on the procedure and fitment options - for the dash speakers - size and manufacture best suited to the 1990 - 1993 W124 ?

Are these the same size speakers for a 1987 300E as well? the 4.75" in the front dash? what about the back?
