Radio volume issue
I have a 1995 e300d with what may be a common problem. On many occasions the volume control will not work. I sometimes have to turn the knob 20 or more revolutions in order to begin to get sound. And even then the volume is difficult to set. I had a s320 that did the same, but not as bad. The problem is getting worse.....any suggestions?

You can pull the volume knob off the radio and gently spray/apply some electronic cleaner to the shaft and the surrounding electronics. Twirl the shaft around a bit, repeat a few times, then let everything dry before turning it on. Results from this procedure range from fixing the problem completely, to just helping a little bit, but it's worth a try.
Other options are having your head unit repaired, or buying a new radio. |

I did this once...the only thing I did not do is wait until it dried. Wild things started happening with the radio, cutting on and off, etc. When it dried, however it seemed to help. This was a while back and the problem has returned; but much worse. I will try again....thanks

I had problems with my volume control also. It would get suddenly very loud when I moved it a little. I ordered a new volume control from Becker in NJ and a friend soldered it in place. Becker and others can repair it for you but it will cost over $100. Alternately you can replace the unit with an aftermarket Head Unit (HU), Crutchfield has a great selection.
