Ipod Radio Accessory on a Becker?

I love music, but I love my original dash even more. I think that recent technology has created a win-win situation with these new radio tuner/Ipod accessories...but I don't want to buy it if you guys know why it won't work.

Does anyone know, or has anyone tried to use a modern Ipod radio accessory with the type of radio I have? I don't want to waste money on an Ipod and a radio tuner if it doesn't work.

If this doesn't work...do you have any ideas?

Thanks for the feedback.

G.S.

If you're talking about one that transmits on 87.7 (or whatever frequency) directly to your radio: It should work without an issue on ANY vehicle. Keep in mind though, that FM is the downfall of this - the best quality your MP3s will have is via FM. I am going to move this to car audio, just for input from the audiophiles.

Becker aux out

There are a number of radios; 780, 1480, 1492, 1692, 2162, 612 & 754 that they will retrofit for aux input. You have to send the radio to them for this mod.

Has anyone done the mod themselves? I was checking out the description listed here: http://www.beckerautosound.com/612/aux_input.html

it can be that hard, can it?

I installed a Harmon Kardon Ipod interface in my wife's 560sel. It came out really nice. The HK kit can be either an audio aux input or FM modulator scheme. A stsndard Becker needs to use the FM mod approach. I bought the HK from Crutchfield for $99.

Now if I could just find a replacement plastic speaker frame for the rear deck left speaker.

if you want a direct transmission of signal from your ipod to the head unit, get s cassette type transmitter, audiovox, sony, etc, brand all have this kit.

GS - I just posted a similar link, see my Becker - iPod thread.

Becker will retrofit most head units with a hard-wired aux input. The benefit is that the digital audio output from your iPod is transferred directly to the head unit.

With a cassette adaptor, the sound is processed through the tape head pathway - i.e. there is some coloring of sound and loss of fidelity.

Same with FM modulator - they sound horrible, IMO.

Best bet is the Becker mod.

As someone else posted, I'd love to see the schematic for this, it can't be that hard a mod.

On the other hand, paying Becker $100 to do it can be worth it, esp. warranty-wise.

Becker also offers stereo upgrades, I wonder if the new CD unit has an aux input? I may call and ask...

C.

I just installed this interface in about five minutes. It plugs into the CD changer connection behind the radio. It works great.

Vintage Becker with Ipod Jack

All,

I posted some photos to the Vintage site because I am putting this radio into my 71 220D. I live in Northern NJ so had a chance to go straight to the source to discuss what I wanted. In the end they took and fully restored a vintage Becker Europa and added the Ipod jack that connects through a double male cable into the Ipod headphone jack.

The whole thing cost me $350.00 for the radio and $50.00 for the Ipod interface.

thats the best option I can see tshaw, but that would mean you won't be able to use your changer for instand CD play when one is needed (right?). You'll be required to pull out the radio and plug the rear connection for regular CD play, just a few thoughts on my end any better idea to incorporate to the blitz ? must say its the best option so far but have to hear the sound quality first and hope no static hiss sound.

look at www.audio-10.com for Mercedes Audio 10 Alpine Becker Radios and IPOD CAR KIT

you can also use dension gateway 500 or icelink or icelink plus.

please look at www.audio-10.com to get more informations about that.

EDIT: LOL looks like the last post had mention of this (I guess I should have read the ENTIRE thread.. my bad)

The Dension has been very popular in the Porsche community... anyone tried one of these? I wonder how they compare to the DICE.

http://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk/iPod_Car_Kit/For_Factory_Fitted_Radios/Mercedes_iPod_Car_Kit/Dension_Gateway_500_Mercedes_D2B/Dension_ice%3ELink_Gateway_500_-_Mercedes_D2B_fiber_optic/Compatibility

At some point I thought I read that Dension sold the DICE unit or visa-versa and where somehow related at that point.

I have iPod head units in my older cars but I don't want to swap out the original head in the CLK.. I like the factory design and my ears are not good enough to worry about any audiophile issues.

I've been search SForum but have not found anyone using the Dension yet.
