Has anyone seen/contemplated a way to dump the two powered channels in favor of a line out to an amplifier? Cost isn't really an issue as I need this unit still in the vehicle, but the internal power leaves something to be desired...

Ideally four channels would be best, but I'd settle for two with a line out.

On the old non-digital Europa II and Europa cassette models (don't know if you have this in mind), there is a black cover over a 7-pin DIN plug. That cover actually contains a connector that routes "line out" into the amplifier for each channel. The 7-pin DIN plug is a b**** to source and if you want to get one I'd recommend getting one soon.

This is the way that Becker adds iPod input to one of these radios - they take these signals out to a switching stereo jack.

I was looking at modifying a 611 or 612 style, I found a correct German script 611 I'd like to keep in the car but we know the sound quality is meh at best.

Does it sound feasible for that style Becker?

I was just told by Becker in NJ that the 7-pin plug is a mono plug for CB radios and the only way to add a line out is to send the unit to them. I go tno response when I asked about an external amp.

By far the best way to do this IMHO is to get a JL Audio Cleansweep CL441DSP. Basically it takes whatever crap you send into it and gives you a nice, clean, flat two channel output. You can then hook up quality amps and speakers while retaining your old headunit. It also provides you with an auxiliary input for an IPOD, etc.

The other option is line output converter, but it's really not a very good solution.

See that still retains the internal amp, the problem with those are they typically keep you limited within whatever range they support. 50-15000Hz or so.... when we can hear 20-20000Hz, so I'd be leaving a large amount on the table.
