420sel: removing wood trim above radio?
Hi, can someone refresh my memory? I've had this off before, but I forget and I don't want to break it. I have the radio out and I had to stand down temporarily. I am replacing the power antenna switch. Thanks.

You should be able to reach up behind the panel and push the switch out, without removing the panel. It can also be done from the front with a small flat blade knife, like an exacto, levering gently on the top and bottom of the switch, but you do risk chipping the wood getting it started. The plug/wires should come out far enough to re-attach to the new switch, again with the panel still in.
I don't have the same wood panel as your car, but it looks like the one in my 560SL.

After the screws are removed, carefully lift the wood out from the bottom. Take care not to break the "legs" off. These are the filler pieces that fit on either side of the radio. If you do break a leg(no pun intended) just use super glue to fit back on. |

Ok, I looked again. I can't access the antenna switch from behind, because the acc unit blocks access; I can pull the lower edge of the trim from the dash opening about 1/4 inch, but the top seems firmly attached, and the acc unit and control buttons seem firmly attached to it as well. I am going to break something if I continue to pull on it.
It is so frustrating because I had it out before and I can't remember how I did it. |

Ok, got it. You have to slide the assembly down enough to allow the top to clear the dash and it comes right out. It takes a little prying/force, applied in the right way of course.
Anyway, I installed the new antenna switch and the antenna still won't work: with the key off and the switch off, the antenna motor runs as soon as the harness is plugged up, until the mast is fully retracted, and power stays on until the antenna unit starts to heat up. It will not respond to the switch at all. It's exactly as if the antenna were getting 12V to the Retract terminal (whichever one that is) all the time. I'm wondering if I could have swapped two wires when I removed this trim piece to change out the ACC unit; when I removed the harness from the rear of the plug this time, I noticed one of the leads came loose from the harness plug and stayed in the switch, and I had to remove and install it. If two of them came loose before I could have swapped them, who knows? The antenna motor did not run at that time anyway, so I did not see any additional problems. If anyone can offer advice, I will probably listen closely. |
