Thanks Iwrock...

Hate to be a pain in the ass but...do you know if they will fit as well in the rear. I wouldn't think it would be a problem...

Not sure? I haven't heard of those, but it would depend on which model. The early W124s just had the same 120mm speakers in the rear as the front.

I have infinity kappa's 5.25' all around. I didnt exactly need to cut in the front more like shave it for it to drop in. They fit under the speaker grills perfectly.

I had 4x6's in the rear at one point but they didnt sound as good as 5.25's IMO. But they do fit perfectly in there without cutting.

greasybenz...

Thanks for the input but....

When you say "shave", just how much and what did you have to shave?

...and how do the Kappas sound (i.e. bass, mid, treble?)

I can get a deal on them on Ebay and I'd like to go w/the Kappas...talk me into it

Thanks...Bill

I don't think there should be any issues fitting them into the rear, a friend of mine has 5.5" Kappas in the rear shelf of his 190E without modifications, i know its a smaller car, but if you could fit in a 180E, i don't see any reason why they would make any less space for larger speakers in a 300E.

Mercedes are generally good for fitting larger speakers and what not, my old W123 coupe had 6x9s put in without cutting. Just a custom parcel shelf.

Ohms?

Another thing I just discovered is that the Kappas are 2 ohm impedence, whereas my amp is rated @4 ohms....is that a problem?

Well, I got my hooks on two sets of speakers I want to try for the dash, the door and rear speakers I'm leaving unchanged for now. I want to see if a pair of MB Quart 5.25" components will fit in the dash with little or no modification. If not, I have a pair of Diamond 4" speakers to put in. Stereo revamp project set for this coming weekend.

Do you have any pics of the speakers installed?

I want to upgrade the rear speakers on my 89 300 as well and want to see what my options are for a larger speaker. I have the Rainbows up front in the dash but looking for a little more bass from the rears.

Thanks,

5.25" MB Quarts installed

I finally got my new system into my E500. The most important thing turned out to be the replacement of the stock dash speakers with 5.25 MB Quart component speakers. The stock speakers had only a single midrange cone which explains the absence of highs. I also put in an MB Quart 5 channel amp, an Alpine 9885, and a 10" sub (blaupunkt). It sounds great. Now I can actually hear lyrics and bass at the same time without having to turn the volume up hysterically.

The MB Quarts went into the dash. It required no cutting in the dash, only the removal of some of the foam stuff attached to the bottom of the grilles. Very easy. Between that and the new headunit and the amp, I can't believe it's still in the same car. The sound is really good and very very clean.
