Theft deterrent radio

I reinstalled the radio in my 560SL today after having it out for about a month. The radio is a Becker 754 and is supposed to have a theft deterrent feature whereby the radio becomes disabled if it is removed and must go to the dealer to be reset. I was all prepared to install the radio and not have it work because of the theft deterrent system. But lo and behold when I hooked it all up, it worked fine. Why I wonder?

When I removed the radio, the car battery was disconnected. It was connected when I installed the radio. I wonder if by the car's battery being disconnected, this disabled the theft deterrent system? If that's the case, that's good info to know, because I'll need to remove the radio again this spring and if disconnecting the car battery when removing the radio allows the radio to work upon re-installation, that will save me a trip to the dealer.

Anyone know for sure?

The early radios that had to go to the dealer to be reset, only went to code if they were removed when the alarm was set OR if the internal battery was dead and the radio was disconnected from power. This last case is the most common problem.

Steve - my alarm was not set, but my internal battery certainly was dead. That's the reason I took it out, to try to replace it. Turns out I didn't have the right soldering iron to do the job, so for the time being I just reinstalled it, not expecting it to work without a trip to the dealer.

Actually, I think the latest versions of that theft deterent system didn't rely on the battery. They were only sent to code if taken out while the alarm was set.
