Mounting subs in 83 300SD, need advice
i might be buying a 150 watt amp, and 2 12" subs off of my friend for an ungodly low price. My question is, i want as much trunk space as possible, as well as as much thump as possible. I realize these contradict each other. I plan to route the port through the storage hatch on the rear lid. My question is, with my 150 want amp, is it better to run just one sub or both? Also, can i get away with a smaller box if i fill it with that "stuffing" stuff and have a decent sized port? What is the absolute MINIMUM box size requirements? i will be building it myself so i was actually wondering if it would be possible to have a box where i could have the amp built onto the side of it, and a quick realease connection to it so i can just pop out the box whenever i need trunk space. Also, about wiring the amp, can i just take the wires from the rear speakers and split them? obviously with heavier guage wire after the amp, but will the standard wire be enough to carry current to the amp?(not in the mood to re-wire the car). Thanks for your help

Check out Crutchfield for info about enclosure/box dimensions for your subwoofers (www.crutchfield.com). Crutchfield will have recommendations based on the manufacturer's guidelines for their subwoofers and general info. Also, your local library probably has a book about car stereo systems and installations that will discuss subwoofer enclosures/boxes and how to make them.
Good Luck! ! |

RG5384,
To answer your myriad of questions, let's start with your amp. Is your amp rated at 150x2 RMS? RMS means constant power. A lot of amp makers out there rate their amps by the MAX power it can put out. This can be quite frustrating. An amp that's rated at 500W doesn't mean that it will play at 500 watts. What it means is that it is able to play up to 500 watts for the shortest amount of time, even as short as a nano-second. Another thing. When an amp says 500 watts max, that probably means 500 watts with distortion, and RMS would probably be cut down to half. Concentrate on the RMS number. That's what you'll be getting. Second, you did not mention what type of subwoofer you have and its power handling. It's better to have one sub playing at 100 watts, than two subs playing at 75 watts each with distortion. The type of subwoofer you have will dictate on what type of box/enclosure you should use and how big the box should be. Check with your subwoofer's specs. All subs will require a certain amount of space, measured in cubic feet inches. I wasn't sure on why you wanted to splice your rear speakers. Hope this helps. Vu |
