Aftermarket Pre out to Becker???

Is it possible to wire the pre output from an aftermarket deck (2V RCAs) to the factory amps. I have a 1991 300e with a Becker 1432.

I am thinking that this would avoid alot of rewiring.

bhorne,

I am in the process of finding a replacement for my 1991 SDL's FM/Tape (Becker, I guess - don't know what model - but, it looks good and sounds bad!)

After a lengthy discussion with experts at Crutchfield (Robert, ext 3281) I believe the following to be true:

- aftermarket systems put out different voltage that amps are expecting to get
- can get aftermarket system with two outputs for two amps (aftermarket required - in the cheapest $170 range each) and then use existing speakers (mine reportedly has ten separate hook ups)
- can get aftermarket system and run new wiring to aftermarket speakers (will do max of four - unless you go back to separate amps - and then you are back to the same solution as above).

Yours may not be the same as mine, though.

Factory to Aftermarket

I think yours will be the same as mine. I believe the 90 to 93 S and E were all about the same.

There is one more wrinkle going aftermarket in this vintage. The tuner is actually in the trunk. You have to run an antenna wire from the trunk to the new head unit. Ugh!

Model year 1990 has a one piece radio, model # 1480. MY 91 thru 93 have the two piece 1432. There is a cable kit available for replacement of a two piece unit with a one piece radio.

hrbeckerna,

I would really appreciate any further info on the cable kit - i.e. if this is a simple fix to be able to go aftermarket Blau or other it would be great - however, seems I was told that anything that fed into the 10 speaker system had to have more output than you would be getting through a single unit ... hence, with any single unit (w/o separate amps) one would be able to only go to four speakers ....

Still looking for options.

Thanks.

George

Any 91 S-Class has already a sound system with the amps behind the rear seat backrest. Those two digital amps feed your ten speakers. To drive these amps you need line out or speaker outputs in the 2 - 3 Volt range. Our cable kit supports this sound system. I cant tell you anymore on this board or I am violating the rules again.
