Becker 754 Upgrade
The radio in my 87 560 SL has been dead for several month from being disconnected and the resulting four dashes. I wanted to keep the original look so I shipped to Becker for service back to factory specs. I also had them add an auxiliary input for an IPod.
In addition, I order speakers from Crutchfield. Pioneer has a new offering for a 4-inch and one of the few recommended fitting this car. The replacements are Pioneer TS-G1042R 4" 2-way speakers. The fit was snug but was able to manage. I also added speaker baffles but had to cut so much that I question the effectiveness. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3RBUUIECCOC/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=130TSG1042&id=detailed_info Overall, I am very pleased with the results. The Pioneer offers a very nice improvement to the factory set. The IPod also provides a step change in sound quality over the radio and cassette as you would expect. It still lacks big bass but this is about as good as you are going to get trying to keep the OEM look and with 4-inch speakers. Cheers! |

Yup, It's amazing what a new set of speakers will do in these old things. I installed the same Pioneers and a Becker 780 in the 300. Obviously its not going to blow away my friends 07 / 08 vehicles, but its sounds just fine for everyday cruising.
