Are rear door speakers in 124/ '95 e320 useless?

Just picked up a 1995 /124 E320 wagon. Put in a Pioner CD deck, and am replacing the front speakers with Rockford 4" Punch (which I have done in the past in another 124, and glued in place with latex caulk; works great). The rear door speakers don't seem to do much more than a little mid range. Were they intended to be woofer, or mid range? IS there a cross-over network associated with the amp feeding these speakers? MAybe I should just run rear wires directly to the door speakers from the head unit , which does have enough power , and install new rear door 3 way speakers, or possibly 3-ways in the spare tire well and opposite side?? Thanks for any comments.
