Speaker grills in an SEC?

Anybody know how to get the rear speaker grills in an SEC out? Mine seem to be made of metal and I'm afraid to force them and possibly bend them. I took out the rest of the rear shelf, but can't find a screw, tab, etc. to release them. I tried prying the side of them with a flat head screwdriver last night, but they didn't budge. Can't see anything underneath holding them in either.

I looked underneath the metal that supports the rear shelf and all around the grills from the top. I can't see a screw anywhere. I figured maybe they are held in by some kind of clips or tabs, but couldn't find any evidence of that either.

Exclamation

Tabs in the back and a clip up front.

Take your time, they're VERY brittle.

Okay. So, I should push back lift up on the front and then lift the back up last? I'll try again this afternoon. The grill doesn't appear to be plastic. It seems like it;s made of some type of mesh material, almost like metal.

Sides are plastic, take my word for it

Nono, it has to slide forward to disconnect from some clip.

Okay. I'll try that tonight. Now that I have my kitchen sink replaced, I can get back to working on the car.

I've probably asked before, but can't remember where or what the answer was. What are the best places you've found to buy car audio stuff? I went into Best but last week while I was killing some time, hoping to listen to a few different speakers that have been mentioned here. Theirs weren't hooked up. Their sales person knew nothing about them either. I'm thinking buying from a catalog or off the internet is probably best.

I usually go to CarToys to play with and listen to stuff.
Occasionally I buy them there as well, mostly when they're having a decent sale. (They are the same company as Best Buy.)

I suppose maybe it depends upon which Best Buy you go to. It seems to be hit or miss. In the Washington, DC area Myer Emco seems to be pretty good. They know what they're talking about, have nice demo facilities, and are usually more competitve price-wise than I used to think they would be.

Last time I checked, I had a couple of double dins also. The flip ups are all that will fit in the 126 without major mods. Of course, one day I aspire to have a boomin system like yours so I can annoy the neighbors even more.

BigBuy has so so equipment, I'd look at a more audio-only type of store for higher end equipment.

Oops.. I misspoke on this. Best Buy and Magnolia Hi-Fi are the same company, not related to Car Toys at all.

As for decks, I like the idea of a double din, but as mentioned, they require major modification.
If I ever get that brave, I suspect I'll end up with a car PC installed, rather than a normal head unit!

www.crutchfield.com is supposed to be the best place online, if you know what you are looking for. Their customer support and paper catalogue are supposed to be superb.

"iwrock" (who is a good friend of mine, here, who is a student and in charge of the IT dept in a University and an expert Mercedes Benz stereo system installer) recommended them to me; I was looking for an RCA cable so I could hook it up to my Alpine, to be able to play cassettes in the indash CD player too, I have a huge cassette collection, way too expensive to burn them all onto CDs.)

I am waiting for my first order from crutchfield to get here, it has been almost a week, we will see...
