antenna noise on max

Hello,

1984 300sd turbo diesel. I'm very new to DIY.

Radio wasn't working, antenna was broken and crumbling, and the antenna grommet/seal had deteriorated.

1. I fixed the radio by replacing a fuse (search here suggested I try that first). Very proud of myself
2. Removed the crumbling antenna.
3. Removed the antenna motor in thr trunk and discovered two things: a) the housing where the shaft enters the motor had been broken off, and b) the second shaft inside the housing was all bent up. I found a similar diameter secondary shaft in the hardware store, sawed it to size, then cleaned out the inside of the motor area and epoxied the broken housing together.
4. Jammed the shaft through the grommet
5. Fed in a new antenna, after lightly lubing it with silicone spray.

So... it all works I'm super impressed with myself now, although I wish I had taken pics for others, sorry

The antenna goes up and down when the radio is on/off. When the antenna is set to "max", and I turn the radio on, the antenna extends, and when it's fully extended, I still hear the motor whirring and there's a "chunk chunk chunk" grinding noise for several seconds... the gears keep rubbing against the cord teeth.

Does this mean the replacement antenna I purchased is too short? There are no issues when turning off the system and lowering the antenna.

I acquired it through one of the retailers, frm phoenix. Hmmm.. what can I do to stop this? Retrain the motor?

Thank you for your help!

Yeah,

You're in uncharted territory for me.
The Antennae motor is unable to "sense" the top end of the Antennae mast travel.
That's why it's still trying to push the mast up.Not Good (it's mechanical ,so no
"retraining".)
I'd not use the Max setting.

The best I can do for you is this link to a parts diagram for the whole Antennae:
