Blaupunkt radio model

Hi,
I would like to know your opinions on Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette with CD Changers or AM/FM/CD units. I have been researching at the Blaupunkt web site and found that there are too many models of receivers to choose from. The site also mentions which ones are entry level, mid level or high end.

I am particularly interested in the Reno CM127 model. Any comments on this model. A friend gave me a CD changer which is compatible with this model which is one of the reasons for this choice. However, I would like to hear your opinions also.

Thanks.
Omy

To the best of my knowledge, Blaupunkt does not manufacture this model anymore, so the chances that you will be able to acquire this model are somewhat slim... Blaupunkt in general makes, in my opinion, great head units...their speakers are a bit lacking, but that said, Blaupunkt is a great company with a great reputation...

Try looking at only the 2001 models because that's probably the only models you'll be able to find...

Hope that helps!

Hi,

Thanks for replying. You are right. However, I found a place that sells refurbished Blaupunkts (www.midwest-usa.com). In fact, I just installed one today to replace my Becker Mexico. I chose the Monterey instead of the the Reno because it already has a CD and has an option later on for adding a changer. In addition, the Monterey model was a high end model compared to the Reno which was a mid-level model. I am very pleased with the one that I got. Only challenge that I had were the connectors. I had to redo all the speaker connections and look for a live 12 volts for the memory of the radio.

Question: if I replace the original speakers that came with the car, what speakers can I buy that will produce the quality of sound that will make the Blaupunkt radio sound better?

Thanks.
Omy

Midwest USA is the Blaupunkt service centre for the US...I had to deal with them on one of my warranty claims... They were very knowledgable fast and efficient...

Regarding speakers, it all depends on what type of music you listen to... Remember not all speakers are created equal... sorry I am not familiar with the speaker locations and the sizes for the 300SD. Do you even have speakers in the front?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

The 300SD has 4 speakers. However, the way the Becker radio works is through a potentiometer that controls the front speakers and the rear speakers.

The original speakers are not as good as the newer technology. The front speakers are oval and the rear are round. I have not measured them yet as I am waiting to get some extra cash to buy them. I found some speakers at the midwest site but I am not sure which one to pick.

In fact, their refurbished prices are very reasonable.

Regards.

Omy--

I personally wouldn't buy refurbished speakers because I really don't now how they were treated prior to being returned to the factory. But that's a personal preference of mine not a determining factor in getting good sound.

Basically to my understanding, Blaupunkt has divided it's product line in three lines... the T-line, Injected Line, and the Overdrive line... the T-line being the low end and the Overdrive line being the high end. I have the Injected series in the front of my Mercedes currently. They are okay, don't get me wrong, but in my opinion they don't do a good job at delivering the highs... something to think about too is that you can get a lot of money wrapped up here...in my opinion if you want value, you really can't go wrong with Blaupunkt but get the Overdrive series because the surrounds of the other "lines" are made out of foam, which in time becomes brittle and distorts. If you're open to other brands, I would check out JBL (www.jbl.com) they make good stuff...
Some other companies to check out are: Infinity (www.infinitysystems.com); and MB Quart (www.mbquart.de)... Infinity makes speakers mainly with an emphasis on definition, but suffer on power...MB Quart makes speakers with mainly an emphasis on power (they really pack a punch) but as a result the definition suffers... JBL's are right in the middle... while Blaupunkt's are more on the lines of MB Quart... I hope that puts things in perspective...

Also pay attention to the speaker's specs as different lines may vary widely... here's some info on the technical terms of speakers: http://www.crutchfield.com/infolib/S-vwOf4EW9Mp6/carindex.asp?id=speakers-glossary ...read this and compare it to the style that you listen too... and make your decision with your music style in mind...

Keep of us informed as to what you do...

Hope that helps!

ODX... Overdrive Line
PCXI... Current Injected Line
PCXE...or PCXG.... Late Model Injected Line
PCXT.... T-Line

Hope that helps...

foam surrounds - uggh, i just had a pair of AR drivers (home system) re-done. those foam surrounds not only get brittle, they disintegrate!

Foam surrounds aren't that bad for the first year of use...just after that is when they go downhill... spend the extra $$ and a decent pair of speakers with rubber surrounds... Foam is cheaper than rubber but it really doesn't pay to skimp here... With foam you'll find yourself buying other set of speakers not to far down the road...

I have found tha Vifa Scan-Speak of Denmark makes excellent high-end speakers that not only sound good, but are robust (big frames, magnets, and rubber surrounds even for a 3" driver), and actually FIT.

If you are replacing the speakers, you might as well get an amp to power them. Rockford Fosgate has a good line-up. Their home theater amps (Hafler) are outstanding and the car audio amps use the same trans-nova technology!

I have a Blaupunkt Munchen, and am pleased. Tuner is great compared to the Beckers in my others. Also a CD player is nice to have.

Talking

Sorry, forgot to mention; my car with the system is an 85' 300D, not an SD.
