I'll examine it a little more closely the next time I get a chance to go out there.

Tools to get er done
Tools like the ones in the pic are used to pull the instrument cluster out. You can fashion these from wire coat hangers too. Carefully slip one about midway left and right of the cluster.
Another member had pics of the catch area of the cluster but I have since deleted that pic. Just angle the 'hook' inward and pull left right left right to coax the cluster out. Then disconnect wires noting their placement so you get everything back together in the right place. The speedo is electric. So it has a plug to disconnect. The outside temp display is also a plug. And the round instrument cluster plug needs disconnecting. The rest of the wires are lights. And then the economy guage has a vac hose to pull out. If your car has an electric adjustable steering wheel, best to adjust it out as far as possible. The cluster should then have enough space to clear. The glove box is much easier. First pull the center part of the pins out. Then just lift the rest of the anchor pins. Disconnect the light. Use a pair of needle nose to pull glove box insert out. |

Are there some holes in the front of the cluster that you stick those tool through?

There are no holes, you just slide them in between the dash and the cluster. I have found that either removing the headlight switch or the ignition escutcheon and pushing the cluster out from there is easier. Those tools really aren't necessary.
