Adapting speakers to 1987 SEC?

I'm trying to install a pair of Infinity Kappa 6 1/2" speakers in the rear window of my car and the originial speakers have a slanted base that angles them toward the front. This base is integral to the speakers and I might be able to cut it off and reuse it. I just wondered how others have dealt with this problem.

I suppose I can just install them flat on the shelf, but angling them seems like it would sound much better.

I cut out the old speakers from that angled mount they were in and gorilla glued the mounting rings for the Infinities to it. It looks pretty good. I'll post some pictures when I have a chance. I don't know how well the Gorilla Glue will hold up in the heat, but I intend to tint the windows, so that might help.

First I cut the old speakers out of the mounting bases. Then, I cleaned up the rough edges some and used Gorilla Glue to attach the speaker mounting rings to the top of the old mounts. I will probably glue in some foam cups to the underside to improve the sound quality.

Thanks. Now maybe I can figure out why there's no sound coming through on the driver's side. It was like that already, so I don't think it's anything I did. I also ran some 12 gauge speaker wire to the front of the car while I had everything out. Didn't have time to hook it up yet, though.

Pretty much what I did in my SDL. Works fine, most of that is simply rear fill as there's too much crap to reflect off for good imaging.

Quality audio was not high on MB's list in the 80s/early 90s... until the W140s/late W124s. BMW's 10 speaker system that came out for the E32s was AWESOME in comparison.

I agree, the sound quality in my SEC SUCKS majorly. The speakers aren't even blown or anything, they just sound so shrill and mid-rangey. It almost hurts to listen to them at high volume. O_O Especially sucks after coming from a W140 with a perfectly working 13 speaker Bose sound system.

I have my speakers installed and I ran some Monster Cable from the back speakers to the dashboard, but haven't looked for a route through the dash to the head unit yet. Any suggestions for doing this? I also want to run new wire from the front speakers to the head unit. Is it dificult to run those wires? I'm nervous about messing around with the dash too much.

I had to run wire to my front speakers...It's not that difficult, there's always a path through. Just pull the instrument cluster and it will be quite a bit easier.

Instrument cluster? Is that "easy?" I'm pretty good at taking stuff apart. It's usually the putting back together that I have trouble with.

How does the instrument cluster come out?

If you have to take out the instrument cluster, do you also have to remove the glove box? I think I looked at that, but couldn't see how to get it out. I'll look again.

If its like my wagon, its got clips around the front edge with a pin in the middle that widens the base of the clip... (I honestly dont know how to describe the clip, but thats my best guess....)
