w123 240d speaker questions

I have the original am/fm becker radio in my 1979 240d (not even a cassette deck or 8-track!).

I have a few questions:

1) How do you get at the front speakers? My right one is blown and sounds distorted (left one aint that great either). I unscrewed the one screw I could find in the speaker cover, but then I try to pop it off, it seems to be stuck in place by something in the back right corner. Please tell me you don't have to take the whole dash out to get at the speaker.

2) What ohm rating are the speakers that are in there (for now, I will just try to replace the blown one with something I have around if possible).

3) My 240d has no rear speakers! That would explain the lack of F/R control (of course there is no balance either for the L/R, only a tone control). More of a curiosity than a serious question: were rear speakers optional in the 240d?

4) Do you know of anyone who has found the point on the stereo circuit for the amplifier input to add a line in jack to the old becker am/fm. I don't really want to replace the old radio (it has come this far, I like the look, and it is theft retardant), but if I knew the point on the circuit where the radio tuner's output was wired to the amplifier, I might be able to wire in an input jack which could be discreetly placed.

Thanks!

unscrew and push toward the window. As the the ohm rating look on the bottom of the speaker it might say. There is a kit out there some where that will let you add a aux. to the becker but i dont know what it is called. Look around and search for it. If you have a fader switch i would imagine at some time the car had speakers in the rear deck.

Thanks for your response. I searched around but didn't find anything for stereos this old.

Does anyone know if there are schematics anywhere for the old becker radios? If I would see a schematic, I could probably work something out.

Let me know if you can add a amp.

Hmmm... the diagram of the back (wiring diagram) of the Europa II shows that it has inputs for a record player and tape player. It is on a din plug. I haven't been able to find any actual schematics or diagrams of the pinout on the din connector, but it might not be that hard to just take a wire with an audio signal and hunt around to see if anything comes through the stereo...

Then of course, I don't know how you would switch the radio off to allow the line in to work without having both playing at once. I'll fiddle with it eventually and see what happens. If I come up with anything worthwhile, I will be sure to report back here.

if you want to add a amp its real easy, most amplifiers have a high level input rather than a RCA plug. this high level input allows you to use the signal from the speaker wire to send to the amp.

This is a picture of the plug and wires that you would connect to the amp and your speaker wires.

I thought you had to wire a amp to the radio. So I just have to splice into the speaker wires?
