front speaker replacement on the w123

i own a 280e w123 model, and the original front speaker gave up (after 23 years of singing).i measured it and if i get it right the diameter is 4".and where i live in indonesia it's quite hard to find an aftermarket replacement speaker with that size..what should i do?i don't want to work on the interior cos mine is in pristine condition..should i make custom mounts to fit 5.5 or 6 inches?will it fit in there?any recommended brand and type?any help would be appreciated..

It's not a size "4M" is it? I believe that is a metric size and is what was called for in my SEC. I ended up putting 3 1/3" speakers in the front, but I had to do a lot of custom fitting to get them in, and I'm still not that happy with them.

Good luck. You can try checking Crutchfield's website. They have a good bit of information about what will and will not fit.

I would say to go with a 3.5" speaker too. 4" speakers will fit the opening, but you have to make sure the tweeter won't sit too high. Many 4" speakers won't allow the grill to fit properly. You can mount the speaker from the underside of the hole to give more top clearance, but you have to watch the clearance for the vent tubes just below.

If you do a search here, you will find what others used in a 4" speaker that fits. If you have difficulty getting things shipped to you, you might be better off just getting a smaller speaker to be sure they'll fit under the grills.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Chad, how do you mount these from underneath? The fronts of mine are recessed and stick up too high. If I could mount them from underneath, that would be perfect, but I don't know how I'd got at it from the bottom. This is in my SEC, not my wagon.

On w123's you just take off the panel under the dash. Then you reach up from underneath. You can turn the speaker on its edge and slip it through the hole into your hand waiting underneath or bring the speaker up from the bottom to the hole. It depends on the dimensions of the speaker.

I would imagine your SEC would be similar, but I don't know what your vent configuration is, it might be more difficult than a w123.

You'll probably need to get some long, thin bolts, nuts and washers to hold the speaker in place too.

I tried to remove everything I could get loose under the dash in the SEC, but didn't make it far enough to get to the speakers from the bottom. I'll look again the next time I have time to do it.

Thumbs up

4x6Ms are easy to locate with little to no tweeter protrusion.

Basic Pioneer 4" speakers fit perfectly in the front grilles with no problems at all.
